You could use the 02A gearbox but you'd need to fabricate or purchase (quite pricey) mounts; and mount the gearshift in the car (not that hard if you are okay to ditch the centre console). Also you'd need to convert to cable change clutch (there's a bunch of Seat parts you can buy to enable this). I think you can buy bits to convert to rod (instead of cable) change but I'm unsure which parts you'd need.
Bear in mind also, you'll end up with higher ratios if you use the 02A - do you really want higher gear ratios?

is there any way of using the injection system on the mk3 without it hitting the bonnet?

Oh yes, you'll need to move the engine mount. Also you'd need to address issues such as braking and suspension, etc…… so its more involved starting from a 1.3.

The lower the ratios, the quicker the acceleration of the car but the lower your eventual top speed will be. But in my opinion, the Mk1 Golf isn't really aerodtynamically great above something like 110mph, so you don't need to increase top speed. Of course, if the rpm per speed is lower (ie higher ratio gearbox), motorway cruising, fuel efficiency and quietness are better - but what are you fitting the engine for - refinement?!?!?!?

ha, well no. just thought i have engine and box and everything else so thought it would be easier just to put it in as one. as for brakes i will be using the mk3 set up hopfully, then some of the cheapy coilovers for the suspension.
Mk3 braking setup won't fit the mk1. Best / cheapest bet is to look out the vauxhall setup in the braking faq.
