I believe you can do this job without taking the head apart.

Might be able to save you some time?

Yes, I think you can do it without taking the head off, but you still have to remove cam, rockers etc to get at the valves. Few mates have said its more a quick route for garages than the ideal way of doing them. Car's done 160000, so thought might be best to give the head a good going over and new gaskets etc .

Sorry I had to sicknote again grrrrr   obviously had other VW issues to deal with.  Seems forces conspire against me each time one day I will get there I promise
