numberplates???
i'm looking at getting some german style plates, but i am unsure if they are legal, i know this has probably been brought up many times before, but i want to try and get a clearer understanding.
so somewhere like "the plateman" can do pressed ali numberplates in german style. i had similar style french ones on my old peugeot with the little F on it rather than D or GB. when i took it to be MOT'd i asked the guy if they were ok, he said so long as they are in a readable font and reflective thats all that matters. so imagine my dismay when 3 weeks later i get nicked for "illegal" numberplates and a ?30 fine!! the officer said it was because they didn't have the british standard mark on them so i had to fork out another ?20 on new plastic plates.
was he making it up or are they really illegal, i think he was looking for a reason to fine me because he was very unhappy about the noise of my exhaust, but all he could do was advise me to get it sorted.
opinions?

do German enthusiasts of say Jaguar Cars get German plate made up to look like UK plates???
Thought not….
In my opinion if you want that authentic German look why not go the hole hog and get the steering wheel bolted to the Left hand side as well?

surely i'd get nicked for them if they dont have the BS mark on 'em?
If the car is registered before 2000 then it DOES NOT need to have a BS mark or makers name on its "original" plates  so you could contest that ticket
It does however need to have 57mm or 50mm Charles Wright Numbers and letters and be spaced correctly DVLA has a full on guide to spacing etc
German font is Illegal except in Germany

I work in plates and as far as i know, no matter what year your car is you still need the BS mark and the postcode of where you purchased said plates, the dealership that provide the plates need to do that too, camden for example etc.
for standard 20.5 x 4.5 plates the type needs to be 3.25 inches high laser charles wright font.
hope this helps

As we are part of the EU i think goverments should standadise numberplates with rest of europe.
I maybe right or wrong in saying road signs are pretty standardised in europe
Country origin identifier blue number plate strips are compulsay in most other european countries. The irish kicked off so you they dropped the GB side strip for being compulsary in the UK
I prefer the word UK on the numberplate strip oppose to GB

Doesn't TOTR have legal pressed plates?? :dontknow:
Pressed plates are legal - they meet the required standards for reflectivity etc - its just the spacing, font, colour, and plate makers name/postcode requirements….

But i have been pulled before for speeding and the police officer asked about my plates and i responded 'german car, german plates, where on it when i bought it (lie)'
He got out his DVLA spacer card thing and they passed all the dvla standards on his card spacing size colour etc…..however i do know they are illegal! so……unless you can 'dance on ur feet' give em a miss!

I SAY AGAIN, OVER, REPEAT, Any car registered BEFORE 2000 DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE BS MARKS ON THE PLATE, therefore it is a loop hole, if you car is older than 2000 you can legally display a pressed metal reflective plate as long as it has correct spacing and font, white front yellow rear. otherwise you are suggesting everyone who has a pre 2000 car has to go and buy some new plates! thats not happening dude!
the onus would be on police to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the plate was made after 2000 as thats the law on new plates that are made, and they are not going to bother as long as the plate is correct you cannot be prosecuted, you may also display the larger charles wright font of 56mm on those plates, as mine are on the G60,only subtle difference but it looks good on less digit plates , they only made it 50mm for space to fit on newer number plates with the extra digits
But it is definately possible to get old style pressed yellow and white reflective british lettered and numbered plates WITHOUT the BS or Makers mark/postcode as i have 2 sets on each of my cars
