I swapped one on my brothers Driver. We used his works (large farm) workshop with lots of large sockets to press out/in bearings, pullers, circlip pliers and a FO big vice to use as press. It was still very hard and I'd be inclined to pay someone next time!

If a wheel has side to side movement when jacked up.. that pretty much means wheel bearing…..  Am I right ?

Is it noisey when you spin the wheel? Does the the noise change when driving around a bend or roundabout? Brothers was very noisey but when we did get it out it just had a small amount of rust on one of the rollers from water ingress. From the racket it made you would have thought it was total Kerr..nakered. Your movement might be worn lower ball joint or top mount? Are your wheel bolts tight?

make sure the ndriveshaft bolt aint come lose as vdubs are prone for this and thats what fooks the bearings up!, if u get the hub assembly of take it down to ur local garage with the bearing or a engineering firm sure they wont charge no more then a tenner ish to do it, as if u have a press only take  bout 10mins.

other then that its striaght forward and the usal tools like socket set spanners, hammer jack axle stand copper grease when putting it back together and oh yea dont forget to absolutly coat the nuts n bolts in a real good lubricant wd or sumin close.

Top mount etc are ok..  its def movement from in the hub area, bolts are def tight…  double checked that first !

If it was the bearing I think it would make a sound/feel rough when you spin the wheel whilst jacked up, whats the other side like?

Its hard to tell, its an old cabriolet, theres loads of noises !!!!!!

There is a typical bearing noise the whiring noise, hard to tell which wheel its coming from though…

jack up the wheel then shake the wheel side to side and then top to bottom if theres movement/play then thats a good sign of bearing wear

front bearings usaly rumble, rears usaly hum or whir,

halfrauds do single sockets or your local parkers parts etc they sell sockets too.

Went and got a socket and found the hub nut was really loose…  how tight is this supposed to be?   Is there not anything to lock it?

Thanks

FT and you are not supposed to reuse the nut, has some one had it off (ooher Matron) recently?
