Various......
No mpg worries……?
2.0 16v with 5 speed box….. upgrade the front brakes with a GTI set that way you`ll stop…sooner rather than much later.
or a 1.8 8v with a 5 speed box……same advice as above applies regards the brakes.
the exhaust system may also need changing, at least the front pipe and the remainder could be out of a diesel turbo, wider bore better performance.
just a couple of ideas for you to mull over.

changing over units....
catching up with things…..swapping the engine over is relatively straight forward, if the old unit was a diesel you`ll need the petrol accelorator cable, clutch cable should be the same though, l`d suggest upgrading the brakes, as for the fuel tank remove the existing one, clean it out a few times with meths, thinners to remove any diesel sludge, flush all the fuel lines, refit it and place an external electric fuel pump between tank and carb/injectors ( an old jag fuel pump would be ideal, or just fit a vw pump )
The gearbox might be a little more hassle, a 5spd will fit straight in okay, but check the housing and mounting brackets, on the 4 spd the end mount can be different, 4 bolts fitting onto the top of the box with the bracket running back to the front chassis leg, whereas the 5spd has 2 bolts going through the bracket and gearbox casing then runs to the chassis leg. one bracket sits on top, the other sits over the alloy casing.
The front wiring loom will need to be changed from diesel - petrol either carb or injection.
just a few thoughts for you to mull over before you commit to do the job.
best of luck
