How to remove side mirror glass?

What is the best way to remove the side rear view mirror glass? Will the mirror crack if i try pulling it off?

If you need to replace the glass because it is broken or the mirror has faded, you can simply buy a replacement stick-on mirror from Halfords and stick this over the old one - looks fine on remote adjusting mirrors (maybe not so good on old school simple manual mirrors?)

Probably, but if you're simply removing it to replace a broken one, its a non-issue. If you're removing it to paint the mirror shell, then I'd be tempted to mask it off instead of removing it.

yeah don't bother taking them out as you can't buy a new one anyway, vw will only sell you the whole wing mirror?!?! i've had the same problem and the halfords ones don't quite look the same, so if you find a way of getting around this please let me know.
