Comparing the mk1 to a mk5 is like comparing the latest spec computer to a spectrum.
Considering how the world has developed in terms of technology I think the mk1 has stood the test of time rather well. It will still out-handle and under-brake your average car on the road today. Any motoring journalist worth his or her salt will be able to tell you that the mk1 was a fantastic car in it's day and is has more fun than you can shake a stick at, even by today?s standard.
That guy rubbed me up something chronic. :starwars:
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

I'm not knocking the Mk5 GTI but its not the same, and neither could it be considered cheap at ?22,000.

Having just read the article, I can't understand why he'd say that. Obviously he obtained a "journalist pass", then approached VW to borrow a GTI Edition 30, on some false premise - that he's a journalist! Its just an online website, not a proper publication. And he's obviously not even driven a decent condition Mk1 GTI.

I know right…. imagine buying a mk1 for say ?2000 and then having ?20,000 to spend restoring and modernizing it
I think the mk5 gti would find it tough going against such a mk1.

I left a brand new Astra convertible for dust on the way home on Friday - he was trying hard until we got to the bends, at which point my 'underpowered and unwieldy' Golf wiped the floor with him.

No, I looked at this myself. Seems like a here today, gone tomorrow website. I'm sure they're breaking the terms of their hosting agreement, by not publishing contact details.
EDIT: found it: letters@thefirstpost.co.uk
There are too many online users to list.
