Why buy a Campaign over a late series 2 GTI?!
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

Is it possible that the campaign helps to keep prices up for good quality Mk1's in general - a sort of umbrella effect? Personally I wanted a top condition Mk1, not just a campaign but enthusiasts hanker after campaigns so good quality non campaign Mk1's are quite expensive too (found out from experience ) - just a thought.
I have also owned a run out Mk2 Gti on a J plate and its one of the best standard cars I have ever owned. I would say that the Mk2 is a good daily gti, more comfortable, more rust protection, more toys, lovelly balance but it does not come close to the Mk1 if you like proper, original hot hatch style thrills - ie. light feeling, lightening response, buzzy kind of car with great on the limit handling. I can understand why people pay a premium for the run out model of such a defining car.
Having owned all Mk's one way or another (and had a blast in the Mk5 as well), I think I will always have a Mk1 in the garage as to me they are what a Gti is all about.

Single Lamp versus Twin
1. Because I am a bloody snob.
2. Because it is harder to find mint early examples - unrestored that is.

Mk1 vs Mk2 8v/16v
Why do I prefer the Mk2? Well I feel that it is better as an all round car. It performs just as well as the Mk1 in the performance and handling stakes, but is refined enough to use as a daily drive ? what more could you want? However, I think that the Mk1 is a better car if you want a weekend car
I disagree with the comment on the handling. To most people the mk2 seems as good as the mk1 if not better because its a more reassuring chassis and many mk1's are not set up for optimum handling. If you get a well sorted mk1 it is more capable than a mk2, its just a lot more work
My MK2 is pretty nasty round the corners. It's quite understeery and the steering is really heavy. According to the local tyre centre it's all set up right though
My MK1 in comparison was quite light on the steering even parking (when it did drive) and never really got much understeer.
No preference which to take on a long drive though!!

I wouldn't spend the same money on a rough Campaign after having walked away from a lovely non-Campaign that was the same price.
My most recent Golf was a Campaign but I didn't buy it for that reason - I bought it because it was a tidy Mk1 GTI in a colour I liked. The fact it was a Campaign didn't come out until after I'd agreed to buy it.
I wouldn't say "no" to a Campaign but at the same token, I wouldn't say "no" to a 1.6 or 1.8 non-Campaign GTI if it was tidy and at the right price.

Mk2's can be made to feel like MK1's with selective mods like urethane wishbone bushes, rear beam bush inserts and rack mounts, and proper geometry checks.
The Campaign had all the goodies fitted, and some were even specced up by the dealers, but the story starts with the MK1, and that is why good - and not so good - ones fetch premium prices.
Lets face it, since the advent of the MK4, even MK2's feel dated - and I wouldn't even consider a MK3 unless it was a later cabriolet with the MK4 front and the sweet AFT 1.6 100bhp engine (we had a Jazz Blue SE and loved it to bits)…
