My 83 GTI only has 2 6x4s in the front but I'm not fussed so much about sound quality in there as its still off the road in the garage at the mo The sound its still pretty good though even with the original panasonic headunit when you use a tape adapter to plug in a minidisk player etc. You can add 6x4s in the rear parcel shelve supports of a tintop GTI too, there are places for them to go.
I'd never cut a parel shelf or door cards to fit any other setup. You have to think… The more parcel shelves and cards get cut the more rare and sort after it'll make my mint originals
Make a new shelf if you want 6x9s and you can always fit a sub if you want more bass.
Cheers.

Needs stronger support than the silly rubber things - used black boot laces or similar with lops to fit tailgate mountings. Also, don't fix it to the back of the rear seat, so you can lift the thing out when required. You can also make little pivots to the front of the side supports to stop it sliding forward when you open the tailgate, as on Mk2.
Put your old shelf away safely for a rainy day, or flog it on Ebay!
