Just thought i'd say hello to all and say what a great site this is, really helpful
I've recently bought a Mk1 Gti, which was bought in Germany in 1980 and brought to the UK in '82 as the owner decided to retire back home in the UK so it is registered in this country as an X prefix, but manufactured in 1980. It has had the one keeper and is LHD, larger back lights, 1600cc 5 speed, metal sunroof and is in Silver .. has a few rust patches, one of them being the dreaded sunroof panel so will be asking for lots of help and advise removing roof lining etc as I will be replacing the complete sunroof set up, the tops of the front wings have holes and home repair patches (vag wings on order) and general wear on paintwork .. The good news is that the interior is immaculate and has had seat covers from new, in fact I found the washing instructions in German for the seat covers placed on the seat that has been there probably since 1980, so the stripey seats are in time warp condition showing no wear at all, the spare is also untouched and is almost in unbelieveable condition with only a very small hole (again a home repair has been used) where the dreaded back valance meets the wheel well!
But overall i'm really pleased I bought another Vw..
My Mk2 is now sharing divided attention but hopefully will be putting the Mk1 in a rented garage, and i will be saving for a complete restoration

They are the original wheels, never seen five wheel silver!! This is how I collected the car, maybe when I have finished I will have another picture to show you all.
Have heard the brakes are meant to be much better when in its Original LHD format..
It has covered 43k with every Mot and a note book with every fuel fill up recorded in detail, just couldnt let it fall into the wrong hands so I bought it.
Didnt realise they were putting 5speed in such early cars, it has an EG engine..
