loud whistle/screaming noise???????????? please help
was driving to the garage to get my exhaust fitted, when stopped at the traffic lights, i hear this whistle comign from engine, it went after i rev'd the engine, then further down the road, it got to the point where people were tuning round woundering what the heck was making this weird noise…
managed to get home without to many people pointing and laughing..
its an undescribable sound…more of a scream then a whislte, its as if i've got a bunch of baby kittens stuck in between something, the faster you go…the louder the screams.. :dontknow:
think its coming from the inlet mannifold, that area…

you should be able to move it back and forward.
to put tension on the belt you have to pull the alternator 2wards you and tighten it up to give about 5 to 10mm free play in the belt at its midpoint between the pullies.
you may need a long pry bar or screw driver to hold it in place whilst tightening it off though. or if you have a willing glamorous assistant it may be worth getting them to hold it in place!!!
tighten the top bolt first to stop it from springing back.

In my experience, you will deffinately need one!
Insert it underneath the alternator so that it wedges against the block then pull upwards to tighten the belt…

Aux air valve sounds like a distinct possibility for making a whistling noise. There's quite a number of air and vacuum pipes under the bonnet, it could be any of these making the noise. Do you see any performance drop too? Or a high idle speed (this would suggest a vacuum leak)?
Are you coming to the VW meet this Sunday in Preston Brook? Its one of these things which is easier to look at/listen to, than diagnose over the web.
