Original OR Modified?
the car is abare shell with the engine in and original wheels!
i dont know what to do yet?
do i restore it to factory spec
or do i
remove the side trim,
add a clipper kit
crystal lights front and rear inc indicators
flushe the boot lid, so no lock or wiper
zender spoiler
aftermarket wheels either bbs rm splits or mim's deep dish polished?
the car is black
and at this moment i dont know what to decide on
thinking
which one would be worth more value ie money when coming to sell?
please advise guys! thanx

I'd say no to adding a clipper/big bumper kit, i wanted to go down this route and i've seen a veiw examples now and i dont think they look right. Unless there orginaly fitted like cabbys then i'd go with less stubble mods…like coilovers, wheels indicators …things like that…
But thats me…
Restoring it back to orginal would hold more money i would of thought, theres a highly modded 1 for sale in the classifeids for ?4000 and its not sold yet

Your car should be a 5-speed for a 1981 BTW (assuming a 1.6 GTi rather than a carb)

Major mods on a MK1 imo are a no no, as it then becomes only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in the modded state. :wink:

I can't think of any mods which would increase the value of a car, never mind increasing it enough to pay back the cost of the change.
Inherently expensive or rare period parts that are easily reversible will increase the value of the car, especially if the standard parts are kept. I am thinking RMs, Le Castellets, rare VW chrome parts, etc. I think Clipper kits do not as they are neither rare, period or easily reversible.

I agree with everyone else really, stick to mod's that are subtle and easily removed.. that way if you sell it you have a bigger audience of buyers
IMO all it takes to improve the look of a Mk1 is to lower it and get a set of wheels (no bigger than 15" or you'll have a rollerskate… As Dubboy said period wheels are a good choice)
at the end of the day though it is your car, and if that's what tickles your fancy crack on

But, i would listen to all the views, but if you want a fully modified car…..go for it, be a little different to the norm of amost standard mk1's :twisted:

I am a fan of modded Mk1's myself, but they have to be done correctly, IE - NO CLIPPER KITS OR CRYSTAL LIGHTS!!!!! Uuuuurrrrgggggghhhhhh!

i put a set of 15"bbs multispokes off of a friends Corrado G60 at the weekend and it absolutely transforms the car, much better presence on the road not to mention better grip and handling.
but i dont agree with fitting body kits/sideskirts etc.
IMO VW got the MK1 styling spot on the first time around!

Deffo a big no no on the clipper kit, they just don't look right on a tin top, strange how cabby's pull it off though!
Karmen designed the car and the kit so you would expect this! It only takes a tiny detail to change and the overall look can go way off. You only need to drop cars a few cm's and the whole stance transforms. So cutting the roof off will change it big time.
