If you have play in yours have you tried adjusting the steering gear?? You need to be double jointed but with a 7mm stubby spanner (from memory) and a 17mm one you can adjust quite quickly.
lhasa in the forum posted a 'how-to' a while back on this - might be worth a try? :dontknow:

If you are getting a rack from the breakers, try to get one from a 1.1 or 1.3 car, as they are the same as the bigger-engined cars, but have had an easier life, with narrower tyres, and a lighter engine/gearbox load on them.
Damn good tip - I wouldn't have thought of that!

Easy to hack the old one off and re-weld on if you are capable, but not everyone is…

I know the bracket - I must check my 1.3 rack to see if it is on all racks - makes sense to put a tiny bracket like that on all of 'em, rather than having two different part numbers, etc (the bracket for the brake compensator is on my 1.3 floorpan, even though it doesn't have one, so hopefully they did the same thing with the racks).
