When I finally get round to an engine swap I think I will tidy up the engine bay wiring loom a bit as I'm sure its got some "extra" bits left in there from the alarm removal

Chudd…
What part numbers are required?? eg. what relays, what fuses, what wires etc.
Are the fuses contained in the relays?? I want to try and make it as neat as possible. (removable if possible????)

Do the looms simply 'plug into the lighting system or is it a bit of cut, strip, join and hope everything stays connected ok? or do you have to trace all the wires back to their origins?
Only a thought guys cause I don't know much on this subject.

Basically all you need is a four pole automotive relay from Maplin (or similar). The one you want has connectors marked up as 30, 85, 86 and 87. You also want an inline fuse holder, some decent wire and some crimps.
You connect a wire to the +ve terminal on your battery making sure it has a good connection. The other end of this wire goes to the inline fuse holder. The wire that comes out of the inline fuse holder goes to terminal 30 on the relay. Simple so far? I hope so!
You then run a wire from terminal 87 on the relay one of the connectors on your bulb. The other connector on the bulb then goes to earth. This can either be achieved by connecting it directly to the -ve terminal on the battery or to a bare (ie unpainted) part of the body of the car. (Note if you don't have a VW but are reading this for reference - check you have a negative earth vehicle at this point!).
Okay - that is the wiring for the lamp done - pop in a fuse and you are ready to go.
Now all you need to do is to wire up the switch. The simplest way to do this is to take the old wires that used to go to the lamp/horn/whatever device and connect these to terminals 85 and 86 on the relay.
That is all there is to it - simple. It should now all work perfectly.
You need to mount the relay somewhere where it isn't going to get wet/road grime/oily and make sure none of the wires will rub against anything and rub off their insulation - that is all there is to it!
Best of luck,
Steve Matthews

Can you do similar 'Dano proof' instructions for uploading photos into postings and 'readers rides'!
Those lighting directions are great…nice and simple

Would also be nice if there was a realy block / fuse block with one of those water / dust caps on it - anyone know where I might be able to get something like that?

Thanks for that, and thanks for the text yesterday  . Hope the weather for your camping trip was a bit less "showery" than it was up at Gaydon 8O .

You can get automotive relays which have a "hoop" in the top of the plastic casing - this can then be bolted up out of the way…
