Newbie alert!

Evening folks, just joined. I'm based in the Scottish Borders and looking to get our First MK1 Golf convertible. Never had a VW of any kind before in my long driving history (yes I'm an old git!) so voyage of the unknown! But that's where you guys come in! Will be picking your knowledge on what we need to look out for and what to avoid.
So how did this choice of car come about? Well, both my wife and I are true petrol heads, and did have a mk1 mx5 convertible, followed by our current (and outgoing) first generation Mini cooper S convertible. We love classic cars (I have a big history with classics having owned a fair few over the years. We were at a classic car show yesterday in Moffat, and while mooching around saw a beautiful mk1 Golf convertible in a kind of smokey gold colour. Was absolutely beautiful, so got talking to the owner who was a lovely chap and told us a lot about them. Both decided we need a golf! My wife had one of the old vw Polo's (the wee estate version) and loved it so has some previous with vw's. Had a look at an 88 plate clipper, which was really clean but just didn't do it for me. Realised it has to be one of the earlier ones, with the smaller bumpers. The late ones look too much like 90's max power cars with the body kit etc so an older one it has to be!

Anyhoo, if youre still reading this, well done on putting up with my ramblings! My previous car history includes a Hillman Avenger, a mk3 cortina 2000E followed by 2 mk3 cortina GXLs. I used to restore these myself including the respray. Also had mk2 escorts, mk4 and 5 cortinas, vaxhaul nova mk1, fiesta k1 and 2 and latterly I was into 90's honda civics (5 door and aerodecks). Still got my 1999 civic aerodeck that I have had for 18 yrs now which I turned into a show car for a spell, but now my daily driver. Full custom leather retrim and some rare oem parts, it's a nice unusual car to be driving around in. I actually run the owners club for these civics since 2009. Also had a newer 8th gen Civic type s followed by an 8th gen Civic TypeR. Loads of other cars in between all these!
Anyhoo, thats enough rambling, hoping to find out loads about the Golf mk1's as havecsome good memories of these when friends had them back in the 80s. Nice to meet ya!
