So i bought this golf purely to do a 1.8t conversion. I ignored my own advice and bought one that had been resprayed and what ive always guessed could be hiding under the paint turned out to be true. I first made my own rotisserie and got the golf onto it.  I removed the doors, hatch, bonnet, suspension and interior which included  horrible brown apparently polo seats which i binned.  When i removed the bonnet / bulkhead rubber seal the bit it clips onto was quite rusty some of which had rusted away, so i started on this,  no photoa at this time but when you can get to both sdes of something welding and grinding is easier.  I then replaced the little chassis pieces which sit either side under the floor which werent really rusty but had been crushed by careless jacking with i believe  mk2 golf ones as i couldnt find mk1 items at the time.  No photos of the work but i have one after replacement.

The front floorpans werent in bad condition apart from near the front section of sill, so i just scraped the underseal of and any areas of rust was removed with a wire brush in a drill and given a coating of paint, the back paint you can see is por 15 which i will eventually do the whole underneath with. On previous golfs i have found the little metal brackets that hold the fuel / brake pipes can rust badly and although these ones were solid i decided to remove them and replace with ones i made myself.. I was, stuck it on here for 24 hours as a tester really, 50 odd views, no interest so decided i would try to do more and photograph it for when i probably advertise it again..

While scraping underseal / seamsealer of under the driver side rear arch where the square hole is for the fuel pipe i found a mixture of rust and rusty holes so had some welding to do there. Again i wasnt taking photos at that time so this is afterwards.

The first pictures show the passenger side sill and floorpan at the front, i have yet to attack this side. The driver side was similiar  and i just happened to have a pattern sill, so i thought as the rust was only at the bottom i would just replace the bottom by cutting a section from the new sill, which i did. However i just wasnt happy with it so cut it of and welded on a complete new sill.

I then moved on to the drivers side rear arch,  this had repairs i wasnt happy with and rust where the fuel pipe bolts on,  initially i tried to repair what was there but wasnt happy with the result. So i bought one of these.

But first i had to remove the old one, i cut most of it away just leaving the spot welded lip,  i then started drilling out the spot welds.

The sides came away pretty easy but it was still attached at the top so i removed this to see if it would reveal more spot welds.

Unfortunately it didnt so i need to investigate further,  and that is pretty much where i am up to.

Just thought i would say a word about the turn over device, its nothing new or inventive and the car dosnt go fully upside down as i couldnt really see any reason it would need to.

Will also add that i am 70 next year and to say that i dont like welding / grinding rusty cars any more would be an under statement.

Have got all of the old panel of now,  needs a bit of tidying as i had to use hammer and chisel in a couple of places where i missed the center of the spot weld, but there is no way  the new panel will slide in without removing or seriously bending the outer wing so it now stops while i do some thinking..

So i left it for a while hoping if i left it long enough the arch repair panel would magically slide in but obviously it didnt so i had to cut it in half and weld it back together in situ. Its done now and reasonably happy with it.. After looking for a new rear panel i finally found one on ebay in italy,  cost rather more than i wanted and only a pattern part.  Spent many hours removing paint / surface rust with various wire brush,s in a drill, then gave it a coat of paint. Fitting will start once i have removed whats left of the old one and the rusty edges have been sorted….All the braze around the top edges will make welding fun..  Will just say that after removing the stuck down felt along the back of the boot floor,  then removing the thick layer of filler that had been sanded down to look like the original join i discovered the boot floor had only 2 blobs of weld along its entire length joining it to the back panel..
