That's a bummer, but at least an easy fix![]()
Could be worth a new fuel filter to try as you may have pulled some junk through, and check for air leaks in case you are running too lean
Good luck with the retest, hope your tester is fair and just check your tyre!
Yeah, he said he'd just check the tire, so that's a bonus. Fuel system is either new (filter/pump/injectors) or has been meticulously cleaned. Mixture needs checking properly which I'll get done by my friendly local garage. No air leaks have smoke tested it and propane tested it.

Run the engine in and keep it below 3000rpm and no more than 1/2 throttle for a few hundred miles, be patient as it will be worth it on the long run.
Definatley taking it steady on the engine, was only one point I went over 3k and it just felt odd. Like you say all needs beeding in. Last engine build I did was immediately followed by a 3 day trip up to Elgin and back to get 800 miles on it with an oil change at the half way point. Sadly, I don;t have the time to do 3 days away (mores the pity!). Will just have to do some steady drives round the Dales of an evening.

Such a shame about the tyre rotation. At least you know everything else is ok.
I’ve been following your thread for a while and it takes me back to when I good mine on the road, from the first drive out in years to taking it to the MOT station and feeling like you were about to take a major exam. I remember having the same feelings and I also remember the shock of the cost of the road tax.
I don’t have any suggestions on the running issue but possibly vacuum advance or other timing issue.
Got luck getting the retest, then the fun really begins. They’re great cars to drive and once you’ve done a few hundred miles to bed everything in and iron out the teething problems you’ll find how well it performs, even against a lot of modern cars.

Really didn't think I'd be nervous - I was quietly confident I'd done it all, but still… It is great to drive, cruises along nicely even on part throttle - that's the beauty a 1.8 engine in an 850Kg car!

I know that feeling J, but as already said such a minor fault to fail on (I'm surprised he didn't just let you away with it as an advisory, it doesn't seem like a dangerous fault).
Once you get her MOT'd, then at least you can start tinkering and adjusting things properly as you'll be able to drive it more than just around the street. It's been a great build thread, keep the updates coming.
I was hoping he might, but my disappointed face wasn't cutting it!
Yeah, still a few bits left to do so there will be more updates. I'll have to change the title though!

Congratulations on getting it MOTed, time to enjoy it now.
With regards to the mixture, you should have a bit of paper from the MOT with the mixture readings so you can see what it currently set at…

Unless your MOT is done by Halfords (don't ask, it was free)! I have nothing.

I really wanted to keep the original trims - they weren't in really bad condition, and I didn't want to spend a chunk of cash on non-original replacements.
I stripped off the original coating - no easy task on the areas that hadn't seen any corrosion, and filled any surface defects with knifing putty and then a few coats of primer.
![PXL_20210414_200725190.jpg PXL_20210414_200725190.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/mk1-golf-owners-club/image/upload/c_limit,w_768,f_auto,q_auto/v1633010479/uploads/attachments/6155c32e4a018.jpg)
I'd posted a question about suitable coatings given that there needs to be an element of flexibility, and the originals have a texture to them. One of the suggestions from

![PXL_20210822_134544177.jpg PXL_20210822_134544177.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/mk1-golf-owners-club/image/upload/c_limit,w_768,f_auto,q_auto/v1633010516/uploads/attachments/6155c353166f9.jpg)
Trims then held in place with blu-tack
![PXL_20210822_140126675.jpg PXL_20210822_140126675.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/mk1-golf-owners-club/image/upload/c_limit,w_768,f_auto,q_auto/v1633010625/uploads/attachments/6155c3c07fa61.jpg)
I applied thin coats with a roller, Plasti-dip starts to go off quite quickly and I wanted to get an even coating, so figured a lot of thin coats would be better. Was a rather time consuming process, but the texture looked good. In the end I'd used 3/4 of a 250ml tin, but there is an element of wastage using a roller. I gave a final coat with an aerosol front a back, and then applied some Plasti-dip 'glossifier' to give it a bit of sheen. I'm really pleased with the results!

There is the odd area where I had more build up than I wanted, but it's not overly obvious.

Took it down to my local garage to get the mixture checked - now sitting at 2%, I wasn't far off with the old Gunson I had!

The wheels that are on were always going to be temporary until I found something more suitable. At the time I thought black and red would go well, but you are right, they don't! Maybe that is the wheel style though….
