The far right of the Valve cover is a place that VW used alot for Various groundings of the Cabriolets over the years that I have seen, as the 90's used it to also hold the Bracket for the Lambda (O2) sender.
Some grounds aren't needed that much, as in the Bonding (ground evening) for the Fenders and the bonnet, and I have seen them on the "A" pillar to the Door Frame. (These bonding wires are to Tie the panels to a common point that in the oldie days would stop Spurious Impulses from interfering with the Super-Hetrodyne-Receiver [read AM radio]). When the HV leads and spark plugs could overdrive the final amplifiers and you would hear engine revs motorboat your radio.
With the advent of folks switching over to 8-tracks, and Cassettes over radios these weren't as needed, that and the fact that Resistor wires and plugs tended to quash that, and that Radios were not as cheaply made with less filtering of the final amp circuits.
Yes been around radios/electrics since the middle 60's.

Battery to frame is @ 16inches and the frame to engine/tranny is about 0ne foot to 2 feet depending on how it mounts.
Diesel/digifant/carbed are easier to change than the CIS which is better done from underneath as the CIS is directly above the frame horn mount.
