Fuel pressure ??
I'm based in Dagenham and was wandering if anyone could recommend a mK 1 golf specialist or mechanic who could support.
Basically tried all the basics and no joy so I though I'd give up pretending to be a mechanic now and get a pro in??
Thanks in advance all

It's been fine until 2 weeks ago…
Fuel pump made some noise on and off which also impacted the oil light and dash lights.
The car died out as though it was not getting fuel
So I changed the fuel pump and did an fuel filter change but car doesn't seem to want to know..
Have done all basic checks… what I fount is not enough pressure coming through to main 4 injectors but is fine on 5th…
Have a new battery, coil and leads were changed by previous owner….
Not sure if it's just the fuel injectors, return valve, or accumulator…. just Tired with guessing… defo seems like pressure ??
I just thought it would be easier to get a pro in. A friend reccomened maybe system needs bleeding and also maybe mixture on meter head screw
Just don't have the tools to test the elimination….

If the filler necks gone rusty then rubbish gets into the tank and can block the in tank lift pump. If this ain't working the pump under the car won't do a lot as it has nothing to pump.
Have you tried cleaning out the injectors as well? Again if the filter was full of rubbish small particles can move through it and block the injectors.

Well from the start it sounds like the lift pump in the tank was stopping causing the main pump to whine..
But then you mention the oil and dash lights…..
Change out your main battery to Frame and Frame to engine ground…. Not hard to do, but on a CIS you have to get under the car for the frame attachment….
You can get 2 off the shelf cables to make the 2 connections to the frame and frame to engine….
Then I would worry about fuel… Get the electrics sorted.
Yes it could still be fuel as if the main pump whined a bit it could of been burned up, lift pumps burn up is you don't drive but on a half a tank, and the interconnect hose on the lift pump can break or get holed, causing fuel starvation to the main pump making it whine because it has to over work, and you know these millennials they whine first when they have to work harder, then they just stop for no reason and have a time out..
CIS cars are also prone to Fuel Pump relays going bad faster than DIgifants.

So could the fuel filter in tank impact pressure
As to be honest it all started from me letting the tank get low..
When I changed fuel pump the lines and tank seem ok but did not take the back seats out to check.
I've also took out the relay which on my fuse diagram is the fuel injector relay…. it's also known for the wipers…
I'm assuming if my wipers work then thenrelay is fine ??
Also when doing my diagnostics (he thinks lol) the pressure of fuel is ok up to the metering head.
It drove awesome and just seems fuel isn't catching

Just because one thing works only means the fuse is good, you can jumper the fuel pump relay to rule it out.
CIS requires 75 psi of fuel pressure, The in-tank pump pumps from the tank to the fiter/sump/swirl pot where the primary pump is….feeding from, no fuel makes it work harder….. and trys to retain pressure but under deliver the quantity……

Now when you turn the ignition on the fuel pump should run with out the engine running. If it does then the relay is fine.
See my post of my fuse box for my relays, your may be different if as older car?
https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=technical%2Felectrics_2%2Ffuse-box_3
There possibly is another fuel pump inside the fuel tank which is the lift pump getting the fuel out of the tank and onto the main fuel pump underneath the car.
To get the lift pump out remove the back seat and you will see a black metal circle cover, remove the 3 screws and you will see the top of the fuel tank, unplug the electrical connector and if you have 3 wires you have a lift pump, 2 wires then no lift pump.
Found some picture etc from Briano1234.
1984.5-1993 mk1 How to change your in-tank fuel pump | Volkswagen Owners Club Forum
Test that pump and see if that works and good time to check the filter at the end of lift pump and have a good look inside the fuel pump for dirt and rust.
I've gone through 6 lift pumps in 25 years of owning my car, the car runs lumpy and you can't accelerate very well, noisey main fuel pump is the problems I've had when the lift pump is failing.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK1-CABRIOLET-MK2-GTI-8v-16v-FUEL-PUMP-LIFT-PUMP-IN-TANK-C246/200691149226?fits=Model%3AGolf&hash=item2eba1fe9aa:g:VV4AAOSwMzVTw6~7
If changing the lift pump you may need to change the little bit of rubber fuel hose between the sender and pump, make sure the hose is ok to sit in petrol as the hose can decay and fall apart if sat in fuel especially now they put more ethanol in petrol as that rots rubber!
The hose needs to be the same length as to short and you may run out of petrol before the tank runs dry to to long and the lift pump will sit on the bottom of tank and may not get enough fuel.
Always a good idea not to run the fuel tank low as they are old and metal, I try not to go below 1/4 tank before filling up.
Last thing… check your fuel filler neck as common problem for the to rust away at the top and dirt/ water gets into the fuel system which is very bad… remove the filter cap and shine a torch down there and look for any signs of rust or hose, don't drive it and change it ASAP if any holes, cabriolet filler necks are different to tin top cars.
Hope this may be some help…

Please disconnect the Battery first.
Have about 1 foot of 8mm e-rated fuel hose, you'll will need to to attach the new pump to the sender.

Not 100% sure if all cabriolet Gti had a lift pump?
Do you have a full size spare wheel or space saver wheel in the boot?

Pre-mid 84's have no lift pump.
84.5 have one, and a space saver spare tire.
I am also thinking that you have a bottom feeding tank as well, that the fuel exits the bottom of the tank.
Since you have a Full sized spare you have a 84.

So gutted as she's a mint mk1 with only 64k plus she's lovely
Any who knows anyone looking for a solid one… tell them to get in touch
Again thanks all

It was the coil
But now she's running with a misfire !!!!!??
My mate checked compression and the leads and all seems good, said it was full of fuel though, could it be where I've been trynjng to solve the main issue and maybe flooded it slightly… confused But glad she's running…. it's a start
