who knows when it was last on the road but was told it was at least 18 years ago, thankfully someone coated the underside in oil so has stayed in fairly good shape. in that time the original engine had been replaced with an ABF on KR kjet but not very well so will need a rebuild before i use it.
the shell is fairly straight and solid, its had a new repro front panel fitted and a used genuine rear panel fitted along with some of the boot floor however it looked a bit untidy and had a couple of small holes in the wheel well that were not welded so have removed the rear panel. I luckily found the vin plate when i removed the dash as the previous owner thought it was lost so riveted that back on so i dont lose it.
i have been collecting a few parts for when it is time to rebuild it

Zender kit
spax rsx
recently got these colour concept recaros that were in a mk2 rallye
making the rear upholstry fit on a mk1 rear bench frame, they are 2/3 spit in the mk3 they came from so stitched them together.
also got a dash surround and a gti engineering wheel to go on.
i have had this mint citi golf bonnet for about 10 years
decided to replace the section the rear washer bottle sits on so also got that to weld in
as it sits now

i have the pump, tank and rear axle off the car, stripped the rear axle down, removed bushes, arb, drums etc. managed to get the arb mounts off without destroying the clamps. i have cleaned the rust off the small parts using electrolysis and it works very well.

picked up some cheap (£50) compomotive alloys so had a go at polishing them. they had already been blasted so does not take long to get them looking ok, I made them rotate with a rear hub on some blocks of wood and a drill with a rubber wheel on so saves a bit of time using that, they are 14x 6 1/2 inch but have an offset of 16 so should fill the arches with the bodykit ok, not sure if I will use the center caps or not as 1 has a bit of damage to the bolt hole

there are a few marks on the cams so not sure what cams to use as have abf and kr to choose from, I have heard of using 2 abf exhaust cams so may look into that, cam chain was very tight so assume its been replaced.

i had been trying to figure out the alternator setup as the 6a uses a serp for the alt and v belt for water pump. noticed the 16v 6a alternator is the same mounting as an 8v so looked through my old water pump pulleys and found one with the correct offset to line up with and 8v crank pulley and 8v alt.
![20180331_175450.jpg 20180331_175450.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/mk1-golf-owners-club/image/upload/c_limit,w_768,f_auto,q_auto/v1522568404/uploads/attachments/5ac08cd3c9b6b.jpg)

the pulley was from a b2 audi 80 8v but has a larger mounting pattern on the water pump so need to get a different water pump for it to fit too, can see the difference compared to a golf 8v pulley.
![20180331_180712.jpg 20180331_180712.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/mk1-golf-owners-club/image/upload/c_limit,w_768,f_auto,q_auto/v1522568411/uploads/attachments/5ac08cd9b44f2.jpg)
so 8v alternators do fit a 16v with the right brackets and pulleys

I did take the pistons out expecting to find some damage but all the shells were there and looked ok, not taken the crank out yet but it rotates nice and smoothly so don't think the metal is from the crank bearings either.
not sure what to do as have the abf engine it came with that looks fine but wanted to use the shorter 6a block so my manifold will fit. hopefully will be able to get the 6a rebuilt but may fit an abf head as have a spare.
