please help
I'm after some help i have just purchased my first golf mk1 it was a non runner as the bottom end was seized, the person i purchased off said it had various parts on but i have no receipts for this he said it had a 2.0 audi e bottom end mk2 16v gearbox/and a tsr pack c head (i do have a receipt of this), would any of you know what parts this has got? I've removed the engine now and want to get it back on the road asap but not sure what block to buy or even if the head is any good and what engine is best to replace it with your help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

It's a bit hard to tll from the photo's what you have and what came out and what's replacement and what was in it.
I think there are some guides in the bottom of the site to engine builds and mixing and matching different bottom ends to other heads etc
By the sounds of it:
Your gear box is ok
Your head is ok
Block is shot.
If you can find the code from the block then you can research what cars that block came in, find one in a scrappy (or going cheap on ebay) and swap the block over.
Or just pull the lot out and replace it all with another engine.
Hope that helps a bit

What year car is the engine from?
That's a large windscreen washer tank, not a standard fitmemt to a uk car.

If you're keeping it 8V (and I hope you do) assuming the head was produced while Tim Styles was still the owner of TRS Performance then you have a real diamond. Drop it onto almost any 1.8 to 2.1Litre bottom end, the more work the bottom end has the better the head will lend it's self. The bubble block is best by far from early 2.0l Audi but they're rare as rocking horse poo now.
Do yourself a real favour and buy the Golf GTi Performance Manual from Haynes, written by Tim Styles, every conversion worth doing is explained, he was a tuning god of mk1 and 2 golfs
Up to 200hp, use an 8v mk1 or 2 GTi gearbox if you can, the ratios are much closer than 16v, they're strong, problem free and you can put a 16v 5th gear for cruising if economy is an issue.
As far as the fuelling, digifant is plop in my opinion, K-let though less efficient is a far better system a point proven when VW when brought it back for the 16v mk2s, it offers much more scope for tuning though you'll need the appropriate wiring, and you'll never better a throttle body or carb set up, its all about cash
Hope this helps a little, oh, and don't despair, get some paracetamol mk1's are not without their headaches !

ok, so if mine has digifant fitted could i put a mk2 1.8 8valve engine in and it would run?
Ian I've not chewed through the whole post because I'm not a mod kinda bloke but is see you've mentioned 'Digifant'.
So I'm curious as to why you have that injection system because it's my understanding it's rarely found in the U.K. unless it's LHD.
I live in Austria and have a 1990 Cabby bog standard but it has the engine, gearbox and the 'Digifant II' set up the same as the Mk2 GTI.
The only difference is it was rechipped to give an output of 98 Bhp, 72 Kw. I could change the chip for 30 quid but what's the point on a convertible.
By the way and highly unlikely in your case but the 'Digifant I' was only sold in California, something to do with the emissions.
Just a bit of info for you and I'm not sure if it helps in anyway but I thought it was worth mentioning mate!
