Engine mount size. Help/advice needed please.

Post

I need to replace the engine mounts on my '83 1.8GTI tintop but am unsure which size mount I need. I need the o/s mount (timing belt end) and the n/s (gearbox mount) but there are two sizes, 64.4mm and 74.6mm (the other two mounts are obvious). I think I need one of each, 74.6mm for the timing belt end and 64.4mm for the gearbox end but I've seen other posts that say they are both 74.6mm. VW Heritage said I will need to measure them but I can't get a measurement with them on the car. I don't want to remove them without having the replacements so I was hoping someone could help me with this.

Many Thanks. Matt.

for an 83 GTI which is all original you need a 74mm engine mount and 64mm gearbox mount

When replacing the right mount (timing cover side), if you take a hunk of your old mount and cut it down, then inserting it into your new mount at the top will increase longevity, and when the mount does go, it won't drop the engine as much and rattle your teeth.

Learned this trick on my Diesel….
