if a car was 1 year old when it was crashed then cat c would have been major damage, if it was already 10 years old then relitively minor damage would make it cat c.
as long as you know what your looking for and dont pay over the odds i dont see any problem. you would be suprised how much damage a new car will have repaired before its written off

The only issue with a write-off is re-selling, although saying that I've owned a cat D before, and it wasn't a problem

all that involves is checking the identity of the car to stop ringing there is NO roadworthy checks carried out, all it needs is an mot

Not true I'm afraid mate. My Mk1 is a Cat C and was written off by the insurance company when another car hit it and it needed a new front o/s wing and cosmetic work.
To make it roadworthy again it needed a full check and an mot before it could be issued with a V5.
Not bothered though as I know it's up to spec. It's a 30 year old car and to most insurers it's a 30 year old car that's worth very little.

Cat C if i am right is more damage then a cat D and was probably beyond economical repair so got wrote off.
re sale can be an issue, and also insurance can be a little more, but then if you buy cheap you will always sell on cheaper than a non damaged car
Cheers

so what was the full check it needed? was it the vic check? which is carried out at a vosa test center.
if you never bothered how have you got a v5?
