Welders, can you help?
I have arthritis in my elbows which restricts movement, about 90 degrees of bend as opposedf to 180 and I am having to reach to change gear which is rather uncomfortable.
If it is possible could any of you guys undertake the task for me, you would of course be remunerated at what you thought was fair.
Thanks Sean

It shouldn't need cutting - I'm sure your local garage or bodyshop can remove it and bend it while you wait for the price of a pint - it just needs a bit of heat from an oxy-acetylene torch on it. You can then drive your car home, take it out again, clean it up and refinish it with Satin Black aerosol paint (Hycote or Plastikote).
Looking at my GTI gearlever, methinks it can be bent at about 2.5 to 3 inches below the knob and still poke out above the boot.
If you do cut it, you might consider extending it a bit also if it might ease your problem. If so, I'd drill down the exposed ends and fit an insert with spigotted ends: that way you'll retain a bit of strength and concentricity in the joints. I too am too far away to help - unless you could get a replacement to keep you mobile and send me yours to fix it (I don't have oxy-acetylene but I know someone who does!)
