what sort of power can be had with 1.3 on twin 40s
would i notice much of a difference and what type of power are these standard and what can or has been got out of these in the past

The inlet manifold is very restrictive, the exhaust manifold is very restrictive…
i reckon with a good service, twin carbs, 4 branch and a s/s exhuast…80bhp? nobody really tunes these engines so thats a big guess..

could i use my g40 inlet manifold as well
alot of other parts on these engines are the same
im looking for a high revving engine really. something just to rag around a track at some point.
not looking for major power as its never going to match the 230bhp i had in the g40

because i have just been offered a mk2 golf 1.3 engine for free with head gasket gone.
picking it up wednesday
can 16v head be used or gt head etc.

i heard somewhere before that certain old vw heads in the 1300cc had solid lifters as standard. if so what were these out of.
does anyone know if my bits will bolt on ok

You can also use a 16v head (I assume from a later Polo) although I'm not sure whether this has solid lifters or not. It's more suitable in terms of airflow for a high-revving engine though.
I'm doing some more reading around as I'm considering this route for my 76 - Club GTI seems to be a really good source of info…

i always thought a mk1 driver engine had the solid lifters. my bad haha
