Newbie needs some help (engine cutting out)
i've just purchased my first golf. '83 1.8 GTI tin top. Had to have a few minor things done to get it through MOT but nothing on the engine. After 2 weeks i have my first issue. It starts first time and revs to over 1000 and it used to sit back there nicely but now after the initial rev without any accelator it just dies almost instantly. I've read a few things about the idle valve and had a play with it but it makes no difference. It started doing it gradually as when i was driving it it sounded like it was gonna cut out when sitting at junctions/lights etc, now it cuts out as soon as I am not accelerating.
Can anyone help in explaining the idle valve more clearly or point me towards other possible solutions.
Cheers,
haywire

hi ya m8 i had this problem i cleaned out my injectors with that stuff you put in the petrol and i cleaned out the air filter and it it sorted itself out
injection cleaner helped when i had this issue with mine - but I ended up taking it up to Crazquiffs and letting them sort it - much easier

The next thing though was that it idled, just about, but then when revved and foot taken off pedal it died, so i'm thinking fuel lines maybe.
Anyone got a link to cleaning injectors or got any tips. I really am new to all this :dontknow: but well up for doing it myself .

there is a link on the left of this page under technical.
if it's rusting there, you've got rust in the tank, and all manner of troubles in the engine…
change that and then fluch the engine with STP or something like that.
this is probably the most common problem I've ever seen on here and often sorted like that.
