swoping water pumps help please
hi there, ive come to put my alternator belt on, i can put that on, but cant put my water pump belt on as i am using the 2litre block, which had power steering, but i dumped the power steering pump and thats what you use to tension the water pump. now i cant use the same belt as the alternator as the water pump puly sits to far out and not inline with the alternator pully, i thought, not a problem ill just swop the water pumps over to the mk1 gti ones, checkd part numbers, and they are the same on euro car parts as my water pump on the 2litre block, so im stuck now, do i swop it for the mk1 gti water pump so the pully will sit ferther in (thats if it is compatable??) but im sure the part numbers where the same. (unless its me being tierd and mixing numbers up )

anyone got a pic of the water pump tensioner?
i have the 2litre bottom end and it had power steering, so the power steering pump was the tensioner, but i took the power steering pump of and chucked it thinking nothing of it, untill i came to fit my water pump belt, and…… how  lol so i am thinking if i kept the power steering pump i could have still used it as the tensioner just left it disconeted, but how is everyone elses set up??

 I went to see both of these cabbys and come away with none of them  when i got to the first one that was on a garage forcourt, at 9:30 am. The engine was boiling hot 8O so i decided that one was one to give a miss  why would someone get the engine upto temprature if they wasnt hiding something :dontknow: Its not like the guy had to drive it to the garage
The second one that i had a look at, which was on ebay. just went for ?920
neaded a new hood, which i wasnt botherd about!!! i was wanting to replace it with a moi hair hood anyway The body was in a great shape and the interior was spot on aswell!!!!! The only concerns i had were the engine ops: on start up the lfters were noisey and stayed like it while i was there, about 45 minutes, not a big job i know ops: when i got in the car to drive it, the oil light was flashing 8O when i pressed the throtle it went off and then when i lifted my foot off it come backon, compresion we thought :dontknow: anyways i took it for a drive and the steering wheel was jumping left to right all the time (steering rack)?? the front wheels were shaking up and down with a clunk noise ( lower arms or ball joints)?? :dontknow: and the rear exhaust box had a big hole in it ops:
Plus the brakes were useless!!! Nothing to do with it being an old mk1 golf, i know the standard setup isnt the best!!! But this one didnt even pull up 8O
Its not much i know, but to much for me!! as i wanted to be able to drive it right away and sort the little isues out as i went along ops:
So at the moment im wondering if i should come back to the mk1 cabby scene again or not ops:  I love the look of them!!! but the basics of them was a bit of a culture shock ops:
I have an old car as it is, but mine is a japanese import and top of the range 16 years old!!! and has power steering the lot ops:
I think i nead to have a sit back and think about it some more ops:
Maybe i should save up a little more and then look for a totaly sorted one and then i might not be so shocked :dontknow:

Having a total Nightmare
Righty…
Bit of a long one this but I need help and advice.
Several weeks ago, my local VAG service centre, Witherspoons (Edinburgh) upon servicing my car noted that an intermittent cut out fault was being caused by the carburettor.
We established that there were no aftermarket replacement carburettors for my particular car (GX 1.5 51 Kw Solex Carb) and that I would need either a reconditioned or 2nd hand part, or a manual choke conversion to a different carburettor.
I sourced a 2nd hand carburettor, from another GX, which cost me all of ?30 inluding postage - not a bad deal.
I dropped the car into Witherspoon, with the replacement carburettor and agreed a 2h labour charge for the fitting and setting.
Roughly an hour later, the garage called me to say that the replacement carburettor was no good, and upon inspection was found to have been tampered with, e.g. where a gasket should be, there was silicone sealant.
So, I asked them to refit my old carburettor and that was that.
Upon refitting the original, they couldn't get the car to run properly. They called me and advised that they could use some of the parts from the replacement carburettor with those in my existing one to build a better carburettor.
I agreed, but insisted the labour be capped at 2 hours, which they also agreed to.
After several hours of tinkering they were still unable to get the car running, until they noticed that the live feed to the carburettor had somehow been disrupted. So, they rewired the live feed.
The following day, when I was supposed to pick the car up, they called to say that I now had a faulty ignition switch, and that it would need to be replaced. I advised that this was never a problem, but agreed that if this was faulty, then I would pay for the part as required.
They called a little later to advise that the car was now running, "better than it was when it came in" and it was ready for pick up.
I was charged the original 2 hours labour, plus a fuel filter, a set of points (which I hadn't agreed to) and the ignition switch. ?165 all told.
I collected the car, noting that the engine was warm, and drove home.
Firstly, I noticed a significant reduction in overall power. The 1.5 is hardly a "pocket rocket" but it was certainly quick enough when called upon. Secondly, the car is now idling around the 1500rpm mark. Thirdly, the car stalls repeatedly on throttle pick up in first gear, and lurches on throttle pick up in 2nd through to 5th gear, even when warm.
I also noticed that the steering lock is no longer operative, and have since been advised that this is a potential hazard, especially if the lock "decides" to engage while I'm doing 60 mph on the back roads to my house.
This morning, the car having sat idle for 2 days, I decided to see if it would start and run okay. The car wouldn't start at all at first, and it would appear that the choke is no longer functioning. I had to feather the throttle continuously for about 2-3 minutes before the engine would stay running, albeit in a rather precarious state. The car stalled 10 times in the 2 miles or so between my house and my dad's just up the road. It was stalling in much the same way it had when I picked it up on Friday.
Lastly, upon inspection of the carburettor, air intake and so on, it would appear that at least one hose is missing.
Essentially, the car is in significantly worse shape than it was when it went in and is now virtually un-driveable.
I need to know what steps a can/ should take in terms of getting this fixed.
I feel it is encumbent on the garage to get this fixed, but at the same time I don't necessarily trust them to do the work right. Irritatingly, the workshop manager actually said that he was "not used to working on these old cars". Tough - they're a VAG approved workshop and they bloody well should do.
Any advice (apart from the obvious "don't take your car to Witherspoon") would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
AndyC

Steering, got me wonderring
People keep asking about power steering and I've noticed on here that there seems to be a lack of any substancial answers to most questions asked. So we know that TSR used to do a p/s kit, but they have gone under so thats that option out the window. What parts did they use and why?
Can a mk2 rack not be used? I'm guessing it would be a bit long and would also need the linkage mount welding on, but both of those can be overcome. How about using one off a modern car, correct me if I'm wrong but all that is needed is the correct connection for the steering colum and track rod ends, both of which should be fairly straight forward.
There is a solution to the mk1 p/s and I don't think it will be too hard to find, any decent input would be apreciated.

Mk1 Power steering:
You can do it, but the company that used to do a power steering kit for the MK1 (TSR) went to the wall a few months ago. I don?t know if anyone else does one.
