How to fix accelerator cable at pedal (once and for all)

Not sure where to put this, as it'd fit in a few pages, but mods do as you please, another fabulous how to guide from WeeTony (hopefully):

You will need :

a Pair of pliers (maybe)

small e-circlip (ebay)

about 20 minutes of spare time.

My accelerator cable kept falling out.  I'd be driving along when the pedal would fall to the floor and I'd be unable to accelerate.  I'd have to put on my hazards, jump over to the passenger side, lean under the driver footwell and push the hook of the acc. cable back into the grommet.

Today I inspected and discovered:

my hook is bent…

my grommet ripped! You can get a replacement from VW part # 431721559 or from crazy quiff if you're a millionaire

So first things first, I have a look at a new accelerator cable (I'm a hoarder) to see how the hook should look

I take my pliers and replicate this shape on the bent original:

Then I use duct tape to further secure the now weakened grommet.

And finally, I use a wee circlip I had in my big drawer o' spares  to secure the hook a bit better than VW intended

So now I piece this all together, with the ripped grommet end turned round…and this is feeling pretty secure

I push this back into it's housing in the acc. cable and we've finished stage 1.

For stage 2, we want to make sure that when the accelerator cable is at full stretch, i.e. the pedal is to the metal, that the throttle is fully open…

In other words, if you are using only 3/4 of the pedal travel to reach full throttle, the final 1/4 of travel, will only serve to stretch the cable, and result in pulling that bloody hook out!!

So first off, we disconnect the clip around the other end of the cable, and the clip at the rocker cover freeing up everything.

At this point, I call upon my trusty assistant and mother.

She has one clear instruction:

Push right down on the accelerator.

With the accelerator right down, I push the throttle to it's fullest position (the car is off at this point, just incase you have neighbours or like your engine) and reconnect the cable…

I then replace the clip at the rocker cover so that it's nice and tight with the cable at full stretch.

I then instruct mama to do a bit of down and up on the old throttle and make sure it's not being stretched at full throttle…everything seems in order here.

So I have one last check in the footwell to make sure the cable is only travelling straight and not an angle.

Satisfied, I take the dreamboat a wee spin and call it a job well done.

Peace.

Re: How to fix accelerator cable at pedal (once and for all)

Good stuff matey, my grommet went shortly after buying mine, I managed to do a roadside repair using a carpet/sound deadening clip (visible behind the brake pedal in your pic below).

It was the nearest thing to hand when I stuck my head under but worked a treat and the carpet clips diameter is larger than the grommet hole in the pedal.  :D

I've now got a new grommet and still have a carpet clip on there to prevent a repeat of that brown trouser moment (accelerating from a junction onto a busy roundabout when the pedal hit the floor)!

Got to love mums in lending a hand.

I have used mine as a bump start pilot, my brother has used her to bleed brakes.
I am trying to convince her that she really wants to re upholster my interior for me.

yah just buy a new hard rubber mk2 grommet for less than a quid, problem solved and no need for a circlip.

there are several problems that can make the cable pop out!

1. cable too tight, adjust as above
2. cable end bent, adjust back to shape as above
3. accelerator pedal bent, bend and tweak till cable is pulled straight thru the hole in the bulkhead, not at an angle
4. cable old and frayed, replace

problems 2 and 3 are caused by problem 1! also there should be next to no resistance on the accelerator pedal, put a new cable on and its like a modern car! give the new cable a spray of silicone based spray lube too as new pattern ones can be a bit dry

Hi i assume you're taking about the clip at the rocker cover end, just nip into your local auto factors they will have a fair few to try only cost pennies not £.
ive changed both grommets on my cabbies recently..i never checked before but one was just held in on the ring from the pedal..and the one on the GTI leech was bent back on itself creating a loop.. temporary fix that had ruined the cable, for the price of a £4 parts ends up £20 to replace the full set.

Once u have put the new grommet in place with the acc cable end poking through it, put a carpet retaining clip over the end of the cable hook and it will never come off !!

Clips like this and once pushed on they lock.

You can buy the bush for the pedal from GSF for 96p… Mk2 golf ones will fit.
I bought one from VW a few years back for a few £s it's a soft foam which has slowly disappeared over the last 4 years so now I've got 2 from gsf for less money than 1 from VW.

MK2 bush is 191721559 and it currently costs 92p+VAT from VW.

Do NOT buy MK1 golf bushes, they're rubbish, expensive and fail. buy MK2 golf ones, they're the same shape, made of hard rubber, and outlast the car. its one of the only things thats original on my 205k MK2 Golf ;)
