M12x1.5 bolts only fit on my rears?...

Post

So, I've got some new wheels for the golf (rota grid drifts) and I tet fit them today. All good clearance-wise, but oddly, the M12x1.5 bolts supplied only fit in my rear hubs, but do not thread into my fronts?…

The car has had a 20vt conversion, with disc conversion front and back. I "believe" the front setup is G60 kit, and the hub there should also take M12x1.5…so I'm confused. The bolts really won't go into the fronts. Looking at the bolts that were on there originally though, they do look a bit chewed up…

Any ideas guys? Thanks

sounds liek the threads are all stuffed, front and rear should be the same. even if mk2 stuff was used they still run m12x1.5

post pics of your setup so we can ID

Alright, thought that might be the case. I'll run a M12x1.5 tap down them to get them cleaned up.

here's some probably useless pics :)

whats the diameter of those discs? looks liek you have a bit of pad overhang?

it all looks like normal mk1 golf setup, but maybe with the TSR adaptors for bigger discs anyway, so 100% should be m12x1.5. fingers crossed they can be saved!

Not sure how big the discs are. I was told they are G60 setup. I'll tap them and see! fingers crossed

So, tried to run a tap into them…no chance, even the tapered portion of the tap was rock solid…which seems odd to me. Doesn't feel llike it normally does when re-tapping messed up threads, really feels like a brand new tap into new metal…

Also, all 4 threads in the two front hubs are EXACTLY the same issue, like a 1.5 pitch bolt simply not taking it at all…which strikes me as odd. If the threads were simply f**ed, then I would expect some variation…it's weird.

So, I've ordered some M12x1.25 bolts just to see what happens before I try and literally re-tap the holes.

Odd, because the bolts in there at the moment go in absolutely fine.

maybe check the pitch of the bolts you have against your die kit. If they are 1.25 that would be pretty strange for sure!

the old skool TSR kits used 272-ish sized discs, iirc from a rover which were machined to suit and spacers to push the calipers out. the newer kits use the G60 discs and again some have spacers to push out the original mk1 calipers.

If say you had a 280mm kit plus 270-odd discs that could explain the overhang. You may not even have any overhang, its just what it looks like to me from the photos  the pads are definitly not optimal for the discs anyway as you can see they only contact the outer 70% or so of the discs

All I can say for sure is you do have the original 239mm calipers and carriers on there, with some kind of spacer to push them out over those larger diameter discs

I had a quick check, but stupidly my tap/die kit only has M12x1.5 or M12x1.75, neither of which fit, so 1.25 is kinda my last option :) (I'm assuming it isn't going to be M12x2.0 lol).

Thanks for the info on the discs; yes, I think I do have some overhang, I hadn't really thought to look before as honestly there is plenty of stopping power already there, so I never had cause to worry. Perhaps something to look into at a later date.

I can't remember if it was Autocavan or TSR, but one did a 280 kit, the other 285. If the adaptors are for the 285's and the discs are 280 then that could explain the overhang.
I know the Autocavan 14" kit used 270mm discs as I use to have to turn down 280 G60 discs for them…

Just an update, managed to run a new tap through the threads and got them back to M12x1.5 :)

Consolidating threads, so more updates here: http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&type=misc&id=projects%2Fyour-mk1-golfs_2%2Fmy-new-k04-apy-mk1#post_1541474
