Wipers/gauges

Hello people, I'm in a little bother today i was using my wipers and it kept blowing the fuse I was using the washer spray to and after a few wipes it would blow the fuse in the fuse box the fuse is number 11 that keep blowing its a 8 amp fuse ( white fuse), with this blowing the centre clocks all stop working, is there anything I can check or so to see why this is happening, my wipers are really slow anyway, would this be normal, or would I need a new wiper motor, could it be a case that the wiper motor is struggling and blowing or is there any other way to see why it keeps blowing, there is a small clear box on the top row of the fuse box with a 8 amp fuse inside it, there looks like a space for another fuse, are these spare fuses or do they do anything, really need this sorted as I need to take it to a mot, thanks
The car is 1982 golf GTI,

it should be a 15a fuse for the front wipers on the CE1 fusebox, I'm assuming yours is the older ceramic fusebox if the clocks also die? I'd assume you'll want a 15a for this one too as the wiper still uses same amount of power anyway.

i would look under the scuttle at the wiper motor and wiring for any obvious damage, corrosion or whatever, plus the wiper spindles could probably benefit from a strip, clean and regrease. The MK2/3 wiper motor is a good upgrade if non of the above helps, be sure to chop a good length of wire off the donor as the plug differs :)

thats an old skool ceramic type, CE1 is later and uses proper blade fuses.  Annoyingly the wirign diagrams I have dont mention the spec of the fuse so I'll have to dig out the haynes to see if it mentions it there

Thanks john, I'm going
To clean up the wiper motor so hope it help but il put a 16a fuse in and see if it helps, I was out this morning and saw the fuse box and there was droplets of water just above it from all the condensation and this weather was thinking is there any thing that I could use to cover the fuse box so it doesn't mess it up, I will be cleaning all relays and drying it out so it's clear of any water that may have got in to the fuse box, I also found a switch at the bottom of my dash on passenger side it near the fuse box it's not connected is this a factory fit on all GTIs and what's it used for, to me looks factory but not sure il post a picture up so you guys know what I mean thanks again

The switch under the dash is for the hyperdrive, makes the car go at 10000000 mph… :lol:At a guess someone installed a home made immobiliser?

I would not install a bigger fuse if it keeps blowing as you may melt the wires or worse case the car catches fire! and that will be even more work to put right.

pretty sure that the fuse is blowing becasue its not the right spec, the mk1 with ce1 fusebox uses a 15amp for the wiper motor and i see no reason why the old ceramic fusebox would need a smaller fuse. after all its still the same wiper motor ;)

Lol no need to do a engine swap with 1000000000 mph ,the guy at the motor factor said he didn't do 15a ceramic and to go closest which was 16a, but I'm hoping 16a will be ok I have re greased the wiper spindles, cleaned up the contacts, so I will re fit and try again, I will try again with a 8a fuse but, like John said I think it is a smaller fuse because I remember that had blow before, without using the wipers and it had killed the speedo to aswell as the vdo clocks, the car has been on the drive so I couldn't check speedo but the rev counter was jumping up when I turn the ignition this was with the blown fuse In the fuse box, will keep you guys posted, will dry the fuse box out and cover with a plastic bag lol

if you're worried about the fuse for ignition to dash being too high dont, on CE1 mk1 golf they had no fuse in the ignition live to dash at all

Lol so my 16a should be ok, and I do think the 8a is bit small if it uses that fuse for wipers/wash and vdo gauges and im sure speedo,
