Excessive noise and vibration

Post

Hi,

I hope this is posted in the correct section.

My car suffers from excessive engine, road noise and also vibration through the pedals, dash and rear view mirror on tick over and whilst driving. Obviously this is worse whilst driving at higher speeds. Also the engine seems overly loud from outside the car.

I must note the factory tar under seal has been removed from next to the heater under the bonnet, both footwells and lower internal bulk head but has been replaced with dynamat in the footwells and bitumen pads on the lower internal bulkhead under the pedals.

My question is have other experienced this after removing the factory sound deadening and do I just need to replace with more sound deadening or could I possibly have another issue, possibly the engine mounts or something else.

I dont remember the car been like this to drive when I first bought it, although I didnt drive it much before I took it off the road.

Thanks.

Check engine mounts, it's the front mount that usually falls apart and then falls off, it's then metal on metal…..
Are the other mounts all rubber or poly bushes?

Any missing grommets in the bulk head? Steering rack UJ boot split?

Newton Commercial do a sound deading kit which may help but they aren't quiet cars compared to new cars.

Thanks for the advice.

No missing grommets that I can think of. The rear axcle mounts are poly bushes the rest are rubber.

Ive owned a few mk1 novas and would think the golf should be on par in terms of comfort to drive which at the moment its way off. I would say its like driving on solid engine mounts which I have experienced in a 2l mk1 nova.

Something isnt right.

Ive already got the bitumen pads from Newton commerial on the lower bulk head and also have some silent coat and dodo mat to put down. Hopfully that will solve the problem.

Realise this is an old threat but I've slowly been working through different things to make my mk1 more pleasant to drive. A lot of the noise, harness and vibration was coming from worn wheel bearings, loose dash clocks and surrounding dash trim and worn engine mounts. Now thee issues have been resolved the car is nicer to drive but I'm still getting excessive road / wind noise inside the car, this only happens at higher speeds and for example when driving on country lanes the noise is greatly reduced. I've described part of the noise as wind noise although I don't hear it whistle like through a window seal or changing pitch for example, its more a loud air born noise inside the car. Hope that makes sense. If anyone can help that would be great as its not a comfortable drive at the moment. I can't imagine that what I'm experiencing is just how mk1's are. Anyway if seeing if its the door seals without actually replacing them? The car is actually more comfortable to drive and the noise reduced with the window open.

Check your side air vents, open them fully and see if it goes away. If it does it's the foam around the plastic piece that sits over the hole inside the vent. Easy to diy replace

stefant - Thanks for the suggestion but my plastic heater pipes from the heater matrix to the vents in the dash are not connected. If these were connected how to you suggest they maybe making the noise I am describing. The noise happens when the heating system is off, haven't tried it with the heater going.
