Mk1 caddy 1.4 16v engine conversion

Post

Hi, I have a mk1 caddy 1.6 diesel as a project, I have a polo 6n with 1.4 16v afh engine as a donor car and looking to swap, the engine etc is out but looking for a list of what I will need, my plan is to run bike carbs for less wiring/mess and more power.
Im reading a lot about the engine swap but I'm reading a lot of conflicting threads so just want a clear answer

i already have the 1.3 petrol engine mount, but looking into 5 speed gearboxes and mounts what is the best option? The original gearbox in the polo has a large bulky gear change mechanism that looks like it will foul the steering rack and also runs cable shifter system the diesel box is 4 speed and doesn't fit the block size, so what is best box to go for?

Thanks in advance, Martin

you'll need to chop off the bracket driver side then flip and reweld to the 1.0-1.3 position in case you didnt know, and for a 5 speed 085 box you got to make a custom bracket.

the polo shifter mech i believe all unbolts leaving you with the same selector shaft poking out as you will find on a normal mk1 1.0-1.3 box, so then you need the smallblock mk1 gearstick, rod and ends to fit onto it

then its a case of bolt on a mappable ignition ecu, or find a vacuum advance dizzy that fits the polo head.

Why not go for a big block engine, 1.6 petrol/diesel, 1.8 petrol/diesel, supercharged, 2.0 petrol/diesel, 2,0 20V turbo etc….. then you wont have to move the drivers side engine mount?
If you want more power then the 1.4 it's the best way forward, sell the 1.4 polo engine?
If insurance/cost and road tax is the problem then fitting a 1.4 is possible.

The 6n gearbox linkage doesn't have the same shaft as the mk1 box, all totally different, so what other 5 speed boxes will fit onto the small block with the same linkage setup to suit the mk1 gearstick etc, I've got all the wiring etc sorted, just a gearbox I'm unsure about. I know I'll have to make Mounts for it, just thought someone would have a code. I've read a few threads and people say to use a mk2 polo box? And then others are saying different.

im keeping the 1.4, it's the plan I've had in my head and I'm sticking with it, every man and his dog has a 2l 16v and want something a little less seen and once I've played with the engine, port and polished the head, new cams, bike carbs, balanced up and lightened it'll be a strong engine that will have plenty of power for a light caddy.

righto, you want mk2/3 golf, polo mk2/2f/6n 1.0-1.4 5 speed 085 type gearbox, straight fit with the right clutch and off you go.

you might have to change the flywheel for a 190mm one off one of the above too, not sure what the flywheel you have on there now will be.

the Polo 8P box is a popular one :)
