Audioscape-style door speaker pods

I'm looking for a pair of front speaker pods big enough to take 6" speakers.

Are there any alternatives to the obsolete audioscape ones?

Sorry to bring a post back up from the dead - but wondering if you ever got anywhere with this? I'm after the same!

Having never seen the Audioscape speaker pods, I can't really help other than show you the pods I made from birch ply. Birch ply is dense and much harder than mdf, in fact I made my complete door card and pods out of birch ply. What you / we are trying to do is make a speaker cabinet out of a door. The speaker cabinet itself is probably responsible for 90% plus of the sound quality that any speaker is capable of producing. All because of the negative wave cancellation and other unwanted effects such as vibration etc. Anyhow, here are the pods I made, hopefully they will enthuse you into having a go at making your own…. They are really quite good, however I am still struggling to get the 6.5" drivers to play below 80hz so you will still ideally need a sub..

As Walt said I think these will have to be custom made.

Audioscape stopped selling these many years ago.

They did 2 flavours: 5 1/4" and 6.5", the 5 1/4" fitted with a manual winder handle but you really needed an electric window conversion for the 6.5" pods to fit. I was lucky to advise my brother many years ago to buy the 5 1/4" set for his Mk1, I bought the Mk1 off him and refurbed the pods. If I didn't have these I would've made custom ones like Walt using fibre glass.

I have scoured ebay / german ebay and no one makes pods for the Mk1.

These are the Audioscape 5 1/4" pods I'm using for my car.

Cheers walt @RichG

Unfortunately it's what I feared!

Walt - I'm nowhere near capable of making something like that unfortunately… But I'm mightily impressed with those cards!
Don't suppose you fancy earning yourself a few bob do you?!
I'll pay handsomely  :P

Hi matey.. Thanks for the complement.. I made prototype door cards and pods prior to the final versions that you see now.. I am still in half a mind to step up to 8" in order to eek out a little more bass from the front end so I can cross over the sub lower. Someone else was asking similar questions to you a few weeks back and I will say the same to you as I did to him.. Give me a call before you do anything so that you have a better understanding of what to expect and where to focus your efforts.. My install has been evolving for 3 years and I have learnt a lot at every single stage. I am sure I can save you a lot of time, money and emotional stress.. 07861801582

Wow would love to see 8" drivers in the doors

The problem with door builds is that in order for the speaker to play low, the cabinet / door build must be able to allow the low frequencies to come from the front of the speaker without cancellation occurring. Otherwise you will get the driver moving just as much but with no audible bass. Then what do we do?.. Correct, turn the bass up.. All of a sudden you have a speaker moving twice as much air, causing twice as much vibrations, causing no end of other issues. A 6.5" speaker in a properly designed cabinet, like a home audio speaker should be able to produce loads of true bass. But in a door card it is much more difficult. So what can we do to make the door card play lower, well, increase the size of the pod would help, good sound insulation in the form of dynamat and making the door card stiffer and anchor it better to the door. The unfortunate thing about all this is that until you have bled sweat and tears spending countless hours and days and a ton of cash, you won't know how close you have got to what you want.. I let the aesthetic influence what I did because my car is a show car, I still can't decide whether to push that little bit further and go for an 8" in a larger deeper door pod. But I know already that this will cause me new issues with vibrations and I don't think the proportions will look as nice as the 6.5".. But.. I am going for perfection and I have spent so much already that I might just go for it..

Genuinely I don't have a clue how to go about it that's the trouble.
I do like your set up though…
Any ideas where to commission someone to do something similar? Otherwise it will only be a pipe dream.

What equipment did you install in your front in the end? I noticed you didn't go for any rear speakers…

My initial thought was to go for the 10inch JL sub I already own in the back.
I have a retrosound headunit so the power output is low… Will need a seperate amp to drive the speakers…

I was then going to put two 6x9 in a stealth install in the parcel shelf but noticed you didn't go with that. And then it's a case of what set up to go with in the front…

I'm new to all of this.

I am getting the car sound deadened with flashing as the interior is completely out.
I've got some sportline recaros getting reupholstered and the trimmer is doing the carpet and eventually the door cards so it makes sense to do this work whilst the cars stripped.

I just need to decide on what speaker set up to go for and then how and who to fabricate the door cards in the best way…

Right walt I've got someone to do the cards for me haha!

So I need your words of wisdom re set up…
(Please don't baffle me though!)

I simply thought a component speaker and tweeter in the front, two 6x9s in the back and the sub in the boot… But I have a feeling I will be missing the point entirely if I do this haha?!
