Hey Guys,

I'll be soon picking up a Black 1990 Golf MK1 Clipper Auto.

Needs a lot of TLC and is currently sporting some kind of crazy A-Team look! (Will post pics soon)

Anyway. hope to restore it over the next few months and I may have quite a few questions for you. ;)

That looks tidy. Apart from giving the hood a scrub, what does it need?

Is this your first MK1?

Well, where do I start…

It's not been started for 2 years! No MOT or tax etc. The bodywork looks really good, a few early signs of rust but really good for the age actually. Had a full respray 3 years ago and a now hood but can't wait to get stuck into it now. I'll drain the old fuel etc and replace with fresh stuff but what else should I change before attempting to start her up? Obviously, the red bits need to go too!

First MK1 this, had a few MK3's and MK4's and various other cars from VAG range. My daily driver is a Skoda Fabia VRS MK1.

You've got VAG in your blood then!

I would change oil and filter, coolant too and brake fluid but the latter two could wait for a while if just starting for now and they look ok.

Check cam belt and alternator belt, check plugs, dizzy cap etc all looks good. Whilst plugs are out perhaps put a couple of drops of oil down each bore and turn engine over by hand to ensure that it's free. Then before starting up for the first time, remove coil HT lead to get some oil pressure up, check oil light goes out then connect back-up ready for firing.

Oh and new battery - or at least charge the old one.

Generally these old gals start-up well from being sat but it's worth taking every precaution not to cause any damage

If I've missed anything I'm sure someone will dive in ;)

Welcome mate!
Apart from the red (which can easily be changed) the car doesn't look that bad overall.

I think Hairyarse Is about on the money with his suggestions!

One thing though, watch the brakes!
When it runs for the first time the temptation is to take it for a short blast down the road but that might be when the brakes give you a big reality check!

Much appreciated guys. I'll pickup the service parts then and get them renewed before starting.

What oil do you guys use? 0W-40 Fully Synth? I think the engine has done around 90k.

I'd go semi-synth personally

I'm using Castrol 15-40 but I think a number of people here use 10-40!  :)

Yeah I use a decent 10-40 semi - never had any probs but I do change it every 6 months and use a genuine filter.

For sure, what shows do you reccomend? I'll probably be at the Stanford Hall one in a few weeks as thats just up the road. If i can get the clipper mobile by then of course!

Stanford Hall is a great show, one of the best of the year, unfortunately I have a wedding that weekend so wont make it this year  :(

Other shows I would recommend are:

AGM - MK1 Golf Annual Gathering - not to be missed

Bristol Volksfest - check out my thread in National Section

Malvern Classic Car show - end of the year
