Mk1 Golf Carb dilema

PROBLEM

My friend has a Mk1 1.1 golf that has recently had its carb changed as the old one was knackered, however it now won't run properly. He took it to a mechanic and they diagnosed it as being no compression in cylinders 1 and 2, piston rings or burnt out valves. He wanted to refresh the car because it had developed a bit of a misfire however it ended up causing him more problems. Overall I would like to know if it could be the type of carb or carb set-up that could be the main problem as oppose to the cylinders, piston rings or valves. If so which carb is the right one and whats the best set-up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

It would have had a Solex carb originally, but a popular replacement is the Weber Tipo ICH-34. Have you actually seen the compression results? Its doubtful that the carb is the cause for low performance on 2 spacific cylinders. It would be more likely an electrical problem over a fuel delivery issue. What mileage has it got?

No he actually hasn't seen the compression results….. What sort of electrical problems do you mean? It has only 73,000 on the clock.

It would be more likley a HT lead or a plug over a carb issue. still could be an issue with the head. Its not uncommon to happen with low mileage examples.
