Overview

For sale we have a fantastic 1992 MK1 Golf GL Convertible, with 1.8 litre JH engine and K-Jetronic fuel injection. This Golf is in excellent condition and the low mileage of the car we believe is supported by how well this car looks and drives.

This car has been lavished with a good mechanical and cosmetic overhaul which includes a new, black, mohair roof and front-end re-spray to remove unsightly stone chip touch-ups.

It also benefits from some very rare features in a MK1 Golf, making this a highly specified and sought after model.

The details of this car are as follows;

History

The car was built in 1992 and purchased by someone in the UK Forces in Germany. It is a right hand drive car with kilometers speedo, and was imported to the UK and first registered here on 1st November 1995.

What is interesting with this particular car is its specification. It is listed on the V5 as a Golf Cabrio GL which is not a UK model. It has the fuel injected engine and suspension of the GTIs but has a high specification of electric roof, electric windows and even air conditioning which is fully functional and blows cold.

Finally, there is a very rare, full-length interior tonneau cover present that we've certainly never seen before on a UK car.

This Golf has had 4 registered owners in total and we are led to believe that they were all from the same family. There are plenty of receipts for work undertaken on the car dating back over 15 years.

As of today, the car shows 137,205Km/85,067 miles on the clock, which is believed to be genuine given the overall condition of the car, but not warranted.

The car has an MOT until 1st April 2016, is HPI clear and retains its original UK registration number. There were no advisories on the MOT. There are no previous MOT certificates available but MOT history is available dating back to 2006.

Body

The bodywork is now in very good condition. There was a localised rust spot on one rear arch which has had new metal welded in and the rear quarter painted. All other arches and inner wings are in excellent condition.

Additionally, there were stone chips on the front end of the car touched in with paint that didn't match. Therefore, the bonnet, wing tops and bumper have all seen fresh paint, so the car is now stone chip free on the front end.

The Alpine White paint has responded well to a three-stage machine polish and carnauba wax and shines up very nicely. The rear arch spat decals have also been replaced. Any brown/black you see lurking in cavities in the photos is wax, not rust!

There appears to be no rust on the body of the car itself and the areas under the boot carpet and back seat are clean and tidy. When the old roof was removed, photos were taken of the inside rear quarters to prove that they are rust free.

In January of this year, the car was subject to a full rust proofing by Waxoyl, which included the whole underside of the car and all cavities to ensure the long-term protection of the car.

This Golf has also received a new, black mohair hood which looks great. All foam gaskets and tension cables were replaced, the rear window frame repainted and the roof headlining is very clean and white. The electric roof pump works perfectly.

Mechanical/Running gear

As with the bodywork, the mechanicals of this Golf are now in excellent condition. The engine sounds sweet with no rattles or knocks and the K-Jet system has been inspected and the metering head cleaned to ensure smooth running and proper cold and hot start-up.

All service items are now up to date with us having completed an oil and oil filter change, coolant flush and replace. Also the cam belt and tensioner have been changed.

The car rides and handles well. We have replaced the front shock absorbers and top mounts, along with the front brake pads. The rear shocks, one rear spring and three of the wheel bearings were replaced just 12 months ago.

The car sits on the original, Scala alloy wheels which are in good condition with four tyres also in good condition and with plenty of tread left.

Interior

The interior is in fantastic condition for the age of the car and has no wear at all on the seat bolsters. The seat fabric has responded well to a deep clean and looks bright and fresh. The seat foams feel very firm still and are comfy to sit on.

The real cherry in the interior of this particular car is the inclusion of air conditioning. We have re-commissioned the system with the fitting of a new drive belt and idler bearing and the system now works correctly and blows cold air too.

Additionally, there are one-touch electric windows and electric roof. This is really the highest spec MK1 Golf that we have seen.

All carpet, seats and trim are in good condition and the parcel shelf is good too, with no speaker holes. Four black carpet mats are fitted with white trim. If the new owner would prefer a different colour combination for the mats then this can be organised without issue.

The original, grey tonneau cover is present to cover the roof when it is down. However, the car also has a factory interior, full-length tonneau cover - something that we haven't seen on a UK car before - which makes for a very unusual and rare addition. It is possible to drive the car with this cover in place, bar from the driver's seat covered of course!

Everything works on the car and it now has a new Sony head unit fitted, featuring radio, AUX, USB and iPod connectivity. The radio works off an electric aerial.

For security, there is an immobiliser with two fobs, installation certificate, plus two sets of original keys.

Summary

This MK1 Golf Convertible is in excellent condition with no work needed other than to drive and enjoy it, and continue with the servicing in years to come.

The condition of the car and the high and rare specification make this a car that you would be hard pushed to match so viewing is highly recommend.

Any inspection is welcome and please contact us for further information. Over 50 photos of this vehicle can be found here - http://www.yesterdayscars.co.uk/available-cars/mk1-golf-gl-convertible/
