Winter hibernation

Post

I will be taking my Mk1 Golf off the road for the winter over the coming weeks. Car is garaged and I wanted to get a decent car cover for it to protect from the damp.

Has anyone got any recommendations for decent car covers? And or advice on winter storage?

Never had a cover as always felt that it would trap moisture underneath even though they say they never do. So I bought myself a car cocoon and was one of the best thing I've ever bought for my car…
I know others on here have also done the same thing and they can also confirm how good it is.
drive in wet and the fans extract moisture and keep the car dry, so no nasty damp smells and chance of rust penetrating… Look it up as I think one of the sponsors supplies them so you can get a discount.

I have my cars in a double garage which has insulated doors and a central heating rad.

Cars are covered in giant soft fleece blankets from eBay, with windows down slightly and a dehumidifier inside to collect dampness.

I'm lucky I guess as my garage is on the side of the house and quite warm, plus the garage door is open for a good couple of hours every week as my cleaning kit is in there for other cars.  I just have some old duvets to keep over it, to keep dust down and stop damage if anything falls on it.

Never had a problem - even when it was in there for 14 years.  Main issue I think will be the type of garage, if it's a bit damp, especially those concrete sectional ones then can be a bit of a nightmare.

Sounds nicer than my house.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately it is a garage in a block and does suffer with dampness. Was looking at a car cover that might reduce this over the winter. The car cocoon sounds good, so will check that out. I plan on running electric to it over the coming month.

If dampness is a problem I would recommend a dehumidifier.

Don't think a cover would do much

Covers are not for me tbh, too scratchy and decent ones are not cheap.

Cotton sheets or cheap fleece blankets.

Kampa dampbuster is what I have in each car and they do a great job, about £20ish incl crystals from eBay.

alternatively you could just man up and keep it on the road all winter ;) that's what I do with my cabby :)

I'm just trying to decide that myself, intended to cash in tax at end of this month and put it away until the MOT in March. However, last few weekends have been really nice and have enjoyed taking the car out for a quick run.

In fact yesterday, put the car right in the corner of the garage and covered it up, thinking that would be it and then this morning glorious sunshine and noticed that the Aston Martin Owners Club have a meeting at the Curborough Sprint Circuit not too far away, so thought it would be another excuse for an outing.

Now thinking for the case of £20 a month for the tax might keep it in case we have any nice autumn and winter days.  Only real time to stop might be when the temperatures really drop, our village contains the Gritting centre for South Derbys and the amount of Salt they put on the roads round us is unbelievable.  It can be like driving down a beach as they dump the last of their load before returning to depot!
