Its easy to look and say "plenty of tread on them" and head off down the motorway without properly checking them.
At the end of last year I knew my front tyres on the fastback were looking old and a bit cracked but left them on through winter as the car dosnt get used.
They passed the MOT yesterday but came with an advisory so I decided it was time for a new set and I'm glad I did.
Tyres off;

Off the car and full pressure they dont look so bad;
Once off the wheel the true extent of the age deterioration became obvious;
The back tyres had plenty of tread left but again once off the car they suddenly didnt look so good;
So if you are pulling the cover off your car or van and heading directly to the nearest motorway junction for a long journey I suggest you give those tyres a thorough check up before going anywhere and if there is any doubt, get them changed.
Four tyres and fitting only cost me £180 today, better than a visit to the verge or a meeting with the central reservation.
Dave.
