Yep, I'm with rubjonny.. 10w40 Quantum Synta is the only oil I use in my Rivage. I was told by a guy at GSF who used to work for VW, to use that and only that.. Im sure that oils with the same spec will be fine. But I have only ever used the Synta and changed it every 1000 miles just because I am a bit of a weirdo like that..

what mileage is the car ? i used to use 10w 40 castrol gtx but if the car doesnt do a lot of miles and is high mileage .am now going to be using 20w 50 from halfords its fror older engines/classic cars and cars with 100k plus miles  have always in the passed used new graded oil like synthetics and lets face it the engine in the mk1 was designed for heavier oil not light weight stuff..plus the heavier oil will help with tappet noise …has the car ever had an oil pump change ?  worth looking at if not as a kit can be had for 50 quid on ebay which includes everthing needed bar the oil ..the 20w50 oil for classics is in halfords at 20 quid for 5 litres for there own brand  or 26 by castrol on ebay and even wilkos do there own brand at 15 quid for 5 litres .

Oil

Many many years ago I spent about a year selling oil and fuel to garages. The thing to check is the SAE number I can't remember the significance of this but I seem to remember that working on 10w40 etc is not the whole story and it is the SAE that tells you the performance over the whole temperature range not just viscosity at cold and hot. My approach is this if the engine has been FULLY rebuilt in the past 50/60k then use OEM SAE recommendations if it is running above this mileage then look at something that is a little more viscous so it can help take ups the tolerance and reduce things like piston slap, tappet noise and swap age into the fuel chamber. The worse contaminant for oil is fuel. It seeps down the side of the piston and makes it acidic attacking the white metal (big end) bearings. Do those that change 3000 miles or less are really protecting here especially on worn engines. Lubrication factors stay similar over the oil life it is the chemical attack
That is a bigger issue. Sorry no answers but should help you make a decision.

Just out of interest how often should you change the oil and filters on a car, I only done a couple of thousand miles and did the service 2 years ago, the oil still seems clean but now I'm using it as a daily what sort of miles would you recommend to change oil and filters, ie: Oil, oil filter, fuel and air also plugs thanks guys sorry to be bit of topic bit just bit curious now oil is mentioned

Oil is 12 months or 10,000 miles, BAZ-GTI for £20 change you filter and oil if the car has gone into daily service, a worn engine is a lot more expensive.

10W40 semi synthetic, and a good oil filter, VW, Mann is what you really want.

I change my Mk1 Scirocco every year and I only do about 3,000 miles a year, Golf is every 10,000 miles as it my daily and I cover that mileage in a year.

Spark plugs and air filter are not so much a problem, fit a K&N panel filter and you never have to change your air filter again, just clean it every 50,000 miles! £40 for a K & N panel filter, the type that lives in your air box NOT A BOLT ON replacement type as you lose the hot air feed and the cold air feed from the front of the car and lose power.

There is a cleaning kit you can buy, cleaning fluid which you soak the filter in, wash the cleaning fluid off with water then let it dry, once dry re oil the filter.
The kit will clean the filter many times so should last for years!
