Stuttering when turning right

Post

Hi guys,

Today I was in a bit of panic when I drove off the motorway. There is this exit where you make a long right turn. I was in third gear making an easy 3k RPM. At the end of the long turn the engine began to stutter real badly. It was like you ran out of fuel but a bit slower (yes, had made that mistake once ;-)). I immediately lifted my foot of the throttle and you could feel the engine loosing power. The warning light of the water temperature was blinking and after the long turn it stopped. Engine ran back to normal.

I didn't trusted the situation so first thing I did was putting hazard lights on and pulled over. Turned the ignition off and called my brother (can say he is a car wizard).

Checked level of coolant: okay. Few centimeters below the maximum.
Checked oil: okay (did this earlier that day)
Checked fuel: About a quarter left.
Temperatures: water was okay, oil 105 C

With these things checked I took the chance of continuing my journey home carefully. Hadn't had issues after that.

My brother told he guessed it could be the fuel. I'm running on 98 fuel only but since a short while I tried another gas station. Not the regular BP but a cheap brand-less station. His guess was that the system got a little too hot (it's a hot day today and fact is I throttled up to somewhere around 160 km/h for a second before I took the exit).

What is your guess?
What could this be?

Looking at your signature its a tin top car? Have you fitted a lift pump in the fuel tank or are you still using the orginal set up with the one fuel pump under the car?

I did have the same issue you're right Yomp . My car also stuttered as I competed a right turn on a roundabout at the end of a motorway (around 40mph) with about 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

When I was at Bert 's garage last year we 'hoovered' out the petrol tent and found that it had lots of rust in it (see the picture!!)

A new fuel filter was fitted and it's not done it since.

Try the above process and see how you get on.

the swirl pot in the tank has a rubber seal to stop the fuel escaping, chances are this has rotted away
