1981 Mk1 GLD DIESEL Cabriolet

Does anyone know anything about this car? Apparently only a handful were imported to UK in early 80's - I'm wondering if I might have just stumbled across the last remaining one still on the road…

The only diesel Cabriolets I've seen have had an engine conversion from petrol to diesel.  :|

Agree. According to my records, there was never an official production model of a cabby with a diesel engine (there were 1.3 models available on the continent - these would have needed a different bodyshell with the small block engine mount arrangement). But, all the parts would have been available and interchangeable, so its possible as a conversion.

Great car! It certainly all looks pretty genuine to me. Do you think it came with the alloys and large front spoiler originally?

Post

that front spoiler looks like an after market Reiger or Zender one, my mate used to have a mars red left hooker GTD mk1 tin top and that looked just the same as a GTI and came with all the same trim externally

I'd say its a convert from a petrol. If genuine it would have a genuine VW Diesel clutch cable that runs behind the engine not infront. :dontknow:

And there is something wrong with the top hose/dip stick arrangment.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

the diesel filter is also not mounted in the same place as the tin tops. they are on the side of the tower not the front. but apart from that it looks genuine to me nice find i love it!!

Has the dash a glow plug light ?

Post

Yeah the dash has the glow plug light (although the bulb needs replacing!) After chatting more to the previous owner, it turns out this model was previously part of a special order for 5 or 6 RHD diesel cabs, and was essentially a diesel engine in a gti body, and at 60mpg I'm not complaining! Just gotta love them seats…
