Help! taste query?!

Hi Guys,

I'm a total newby to MK1s and I went to look at one but was worried by a couple of points. I'm used to Escorts having owned several and what struck me about the Golf was how long the bonnet looked from inside and also how steep and small the front wind screen looks… ? This really put me off, do you get used to this? Or is it just me being stuck in my ways and everything?

Cheers in advanced guys..

Adrian

PS - The reason I ask is that I've found a car I really fancy on paper but it's three hours from me so don't want to go and see it if mk1s aren't suitable for me..cold feet I guess

Easy, drive one of these around for a while before you buy your Mk1.

If anything, the Golf has a shorter bonnet than an Escort. Also it being quite a square shape at the front, means its quite easy to place. Also (unsure with Mk escort you're talking about but…) the rear end is simply the sloping hatch, then a vertical, unlike the escort with that little 6" or so of boot sticking out - so it would be easier to place the rear when parking, etc.

The biggest issue with visibility is the wide C pillars (at the back of the car). This is not too bad in the hatchback, in a cabby it makes parking and reversing around corners a little bit trickier. But then in a cabby you can put the hood down and then you have great all round vision!

Or drive an original Beetle, your nose is about 2 inch from the screen.

Mate has a Cit Piscasso, he has to climb on the dash to reach the front of the screen when cleaning it….

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Sorry guys I certainly wasn't picking holes in the MK1   Just from the cabin it was a very different view from what I am used too.

It just felt while I was sitting there a bit strange as I'm used to fords having owned a MK3 Escort rs1600i, MK4 RS Turbo, and Mk4 granny wagon, and my current get to work mobile a mk5 Escort.

Physically the bonnet can't be longer because it is a smaller car, I think it is simply that you see all of it I guess because of the profile.

Maybe I should just say what the hell and go for it and keep my fingers crossed I get used too it… ?

obviously i didnt get the joke/reason for showin pic of saab   :dontknow:

the golf screen is more upright than the escorts your mentioning, probably makes the bonnet look longer?

its a cliche but golfs just feel a hell of a lot more solid than your average hatch and theyre still pretty light at under a tonne for mk1's, al to do with superior engineering blah blah blah

The original post talked about getting used to a car with a steep screen and long bonnet. This is personified in the Saab 900.

I was just pointing out that relatively speaking the Golf 'A' Pillar and screen isn't that steep and the bonnet isn't that long!

Okay?

Tian
