my mk1 arrived 2day :)

who knows what the insurance market will be like when you turn 17, it is so volatile! ?3000 for a mk1 gti?  :dontknow:

If i am out and about near you over the christmas in the mk1, i'll show you what proper standard mk1 brakes stop like!  8O  :|

Good luck!

hey there youngdub, just spotted you are from Edinburgh! where abouts? I am from fairmilehead end of town. Have a look at the scottish regions page to see if you can spot some more mk1s!

How young is a young dubber recently, because it is worth a look at a few of the insurance threads on young drivers if you are struggling.

For genuine mk1 parts, the best places are

www.gpcvwaudi.com and your dealer

For the best pattern parts

www.gsfcarparts.com
www.trimsport.co.uk are good for some things.

For good second hand bits, see

www.golfmk1.org.uk (crazyquiff on this site)

or try

www.1golfahead.co.uk (scouse on this site)

Cheers, Andrew

Are we officially not bigging-up Euro Car Parts any more? I used to use them, but stopped, due to sheer incompetence from my local branch!

Bumper shouldn't be an issue, you can buy the spoiler new (pattern part) for not too much, the grille (specifically, red trim surround) will be rarer but not unobtainable. Should be able to get that part of the wiring loom off someone whose breaking their Mk1 no real issues. Also, you can buy the headlamp connectors from an Auto Electrical place (eg Vehicle Wiring Products) and make up your own loom, or repair, if needs be.

eurocarparts are appaling, rubbish service, they ignore you and fob you off sayign they will call you back return items etc...i would never ever ever use them again, gsf are much more useful, know what they are chatting about and can actually talk the english language, thats not being racist, because im not, its just fact.

Don' think you can generalise like that. As far as I understand GSF and ECP are franchise based, so each shop can vary wilder is serivce provided. I used to use the GSF's in Ipswich and Chelmsford, but they supplied the wrong parts most of the time (usually they can't tell teh difference btween a mk1 and mk2), plus I found a lot of their staff rude and badly informed. ECP in Colchester have generally supplied the right paryts 95% of the time and are friendly and helpful.

I agree, and in fact in my local branch of ECP, two of the staff are really knowledgeable and good. The others are okay and I'm prepared to make allowances for the new girl, etc. But I think its also a case that their 'head office' decides which product lines to run, and also their computer system has many inadequacies so you end up with part numbers all over the place and wrong parts, etc. So you can't blame the local staff for that. The good staff are the ones which know how to 'circumvent' the errors in the computer system and know how to sort out problems that their head office generates - I bet they are as fed up as us, with silly little niggles!

Hey youngdub, glad to see you are getting involved at a young age,i got my 1st car at 13 but was a mk2 escort!

Anyway you need to come along to the ScottishVAG owners club meets in Edinburgh, there at the fairmilehead inn, 1st tuesday of the month. in fact a few users on here usually attend,X5 PEA,marsredgti, etc

Forums are fantastic for info but when you get along to a meet you can learn so much more in alot less time and meet new folk.

Also i have tons of Mk1 parts cluttering up my garage, stripping 2 as we speak for my own project (which im doing with my gfs little bro who is 13 too!) so if you ever need some cheap parts give me a shout,i can even deliver as my gf stays in penicuik. PM me if you want my mobile number.

Good Luck with project and get some pics up when your camera is fixed! 8)

just been looking through this section, starting at the last page and found this.

i remember reading the 'my mk1 got nicked' thread by youngdub.

pretty funny how no one picked up on him saying the car has no rear drums and it supposedly drove, and also no seats

no drums = trailer.

1983 Polo CL - daily

1984 Golf G60 Syncro - sold

1989 Rallye Golf - sold

1992 Corrado G60 - crushed

1989 Polo C - chopped and crushed

1991 309 Style - crushed

Technically a car will go with no brakes - just won't stop!
