cheap insurance for younger drivers
I have passed my test and unlike nearly ever other teenager i know, i haven't crashed a car three weeks later. :dontknow: I am currently sharing my mums nissan micra. We pay ?700 fully comp with 9 years+ ncb. It is a group 2 car but an 05 reg so it has a lot of value.
I have tried playing with additional drivers, putting policies in parents names, TPFT, unmodified, tracking device, steering wheel lock, immobiliser etc. I dabled in classic car insurance but found policy holders must be 25 or over.
So please anybody and particulary younger mk 1 owners please help me out, save another mk1 somwhere from a scrappie and get the club a new another member. Any info will be appreciated and a serious help.

Firstly have you read the other threads under 'Insurance' ? you may find some help here - lots of recommendations for Adrian Flux & Footman James.
Having two sons (21 and 19) I know the cost of insuring young male drivers. I'd be surprised if you get it for much less than your Mum's Micra.
The rule as always is to shop around - have you tried Lancaster or Admiral ? and don't forget the big ones Direct line, Norwich Union and Tesco who were doing a 'young persons' promotion recently.
What we did (4 years ago) was for me to Insure my son's Mini then Golf with him as a named driver (we also specified he was the main driver), this was with the Co-Op (www.CIS.co.uk) who didn't mind that he was the main driver (may have changed so check). Cost was still ?650+ with no NCD but half anybody else at the time, then when he got older bit the bullet and got him his own Insurance. It was him who got me into Golfs !
A word of warning, Insurance Companies do not like young drivers and modifications so keep it standard - Direct Line were competitive but wouldn't let us put alloy wheels on an 850 Mini as it made it more stealable !
One other, from the classic mags is RH on 01277 206911.
Despite being over 50 and with a Morgan in the garage I have a 1.1C and they're just GGRRRREEEEAAAT ! Don't give it up I'm sure you'll get through.
Have Fun

I started out on a MK1 Polo 895cc, then went to a MK2 Polo 1043cc. I paid for a year in advance (all 12 months at once) which at the time cost me ?643 TPFT with Admiral. When i switched over to the MK2 1043cc Polo i had to pay an extra ?33 (?676 total).
(I was restoring the MK1 Polo)
Then i sold the MK2 as it was having loads of problems i couldnt be bothered to fix so i flogged it for a tidy price & profit and was looking for anything to use as a run about, i came across a MK1 Golf C 1.3 (1275cc) and i got quoted an extra ?54 on the insurance to transfer over to it, was late looking at the car and it went the day before ! - shame but oh well. So to insure a MK1 Golf C 1.3 it would have cost me a total of ?730 for 12 months, as me as the named driver and owner of the vechicle - with no one else on the policy.
I'm now insured on a MK1 Golf 1.6 GTI with Admiral - it cost me ?85 extra on my insurance - i was very lucky on the day i got a quote!
My dad works in insurance and he says if you want good cover, with no arguements you'll pay the extra to get insured with a big name like RSA or NU or a Specialist like Adrian Flux (who usually do v.good prices).
If the price wasnt so good from Admiral, i would move away instantly - indian call centres and it takes 4-5 hours on the phone to get through to someone who understands your query or problem.

I've searched through that many companies for insurance on a wide variety of cars where i now found places that'll insure me (19yrs old) on a mk4 GT TDI PD150, mk4 GTi 1.8T, mk2 GTi 16v etc all for under ?1600. I can even get insured on a 2.0ltr non turbo Impreza for less than my Golf, but i wouldn't go anywhere near a Subaru anyway.
Good Luck Trev

No advice I'm afraid, other than that we always use the Co-op for our insurance as they seem to be pretty good, but don't know as yet how they do on insuring teenagers. :dontknow:
Can you let us know though on how you do? My son is 17 and learning to drive, but already has a Series 1 1.1 that we'll be needing to insure soon.
(Like you he has no plans to trash his car as a boy racer, he's already too proud of it for that!)
Good luck in your quest

so i shopd around used a vary of things:
dont tell them what you are doing at college!!! you say anything to do with the motor trade BOOM it goes up! say your an engineer.
work out how many miles you are going to be doing and say that, if u insure your self for 12k a year and yoyu only do 5k they will charge you more. get a thatcham alarm fittd, got my toad ai606 supplyd fittd for 180 8) with certificate.
if you have a garage say its in the garage, its entirley up to you if you actually put it in the garage.
other then that bite the bullet like i did and get the cheapest quote and insure it. firstly i got it for 2k then i shopd around 2wks later i got it to 1400 so i swopd.
hope this helps.

i was in exactly the same boat as you guys. at 17 all my quotes where like ?1000+ then someone mentioned liverpool victoria, gave them a call and a few minutes later i was insured on a 1 litre AX for ?690 fully comp! about a year later and 2 different cars i canceled my insurance with them as i sold my car but before i did i got a quote for a 306 dturbo. not a problem thats an extra ?90. Bargain! BUT when i went to get insured with them again as i was no longer an existing customer and they had changed there young driver policy they wanted to sting me for ?2k!!!
Been with elephant ever since (seem to do really good prices oir young drivers and can insure you for 10 months which gives you a years no claims early). LUPO GTI @ 19 was only ?590 fully comp woop!
Now i am still with them on my main car but have got a quote with HIC for the MK1 Golf GTI i have just bought. Im 20 and have decalired about ?2000 worth of mods.
Shopped around everywhere and that was the cheapest.
