cheap insurance for younger drivers

Hi all. My name is alex trevellyan. I'm seventeen and would love a 1.1 or 1.3 golf. I'm studying motor vehicle engineering at college and I'm not a boyracer looking for an alterantive to a nova. I can afford to buy and restore a golf of smaller engine displacment but it all goes wrong when it comes to insurance. :banghead:

I have passed my test and unlike nearly ever other teenager i know, i haven't crashed a car three weeks later.  :dontknow: I am currently sharing my mums nissan micra. We pay ?700 fully comp with 9 years+ ncb. It is a group 2 car but an 05 reg so it has a lot of value.

I have tried playing with additional drivers, putting policies in parents names, TPFT, unmodified, tracking device, steering wheel lock, immobiliser etc. I dabled in classic car insurance but found policy holders must be 25 or over.

So please anybody and particulary younger mk 1 owners please help me out, save another mk1 somwhere from a scrappie and get the club a new  another member. Any info will be appreciated and a serious help. :)

Hello Alex,

Firstly have you read the other threads under 'Insurance' ? you may find some help here - lots of recommendations for Adrian Flux & Footman James.

Having two sons (21 and 19) I know the cost of insuring young male drivers. I'd be surprised if you get it for much less than your Mum's Micra.

The rule as always is to shop around - have you tried Lancaster or Admiral ? and don't forget the big ones Direct line, Norwich Union and Tesco who were doing a 'young persons' promotion recently.

What we did (4 years ago) was for me to Insure my son's Mini then Golf with him as a named driver (we also specified he was the main driver), this was with the Co-Op (www.CIS.co.uk) who didn't mind that he was the main driver (may have changed so check). Cost was still ?650+ with no NCD but half anybody else at the time, then when he got older bit the bullet and got him his own Insurance. It was him who got me into Golfs !

A word of warning, Insurance Companies do not like young drivers and modifications so keep it standard - Direct Line were competitive but wouldn't let us put alloy wheels on an 850 Mini as it made it more stealable !

One other, from the classic mags is RH on 01277 206911.

Despite being over 50 and with a Morgan in the garage I have a 1.1C and they're just GGRRRREEEEAAAT ! Don't give it up I'm sure you'll get through.

Have Fun

Andy

Thanks again Trev

Trev, i'm only just 20 (August) and have only been driving since May (just over 4 months).

I started out on a MK1 Polo 895cc, then went to a MK2 Polo 1043cc. I paid for a year in advance (all 12 months at once) which at the time cost me ?643 TPFT with Admiral. When i switched over to the MK2 1043cc Polo i had to pay an extra ?33 (?676 total).

(I was restoring the MK1 Polo)

Then i sold the MK2 as it was having loads of problems i couldnt be bothered to fix so i flogged it for a tidy price & profit and was looking for anything to use as a run about, i came across a MK1 Golf C 1.3 (1275cc) and i got quoted an extra ?54 on the insurance to transfer over to it, was late looking at the car and it went the day before ! - shame but oh well. So to insure a MK1 Golf C 1.3 it would have cost me a total of ?730 for 12 months, as me as the named driver and owner of the vechicle - with no one else on the policy.

I'm now insured on a MK1 Golf 1.6 GTI with Admiral - it cost me ?85 extra on my insurance - i was very lucky on the day i got a quote!

My dad works in insurance and he says if you want good cover, with no arguements you'll pay the extra to get insured with a big name like RSA or NU or a Specialist like Adrian Flux (who usually do v.good prices).

If the price wasnt so good from Admiral, i would move away instantly - indian call centres and it takes 4-5 hours on the phone to get through to someone who understands your query or problem.

Does anyone know of any companies that do classic policies at 19+ or even younger as i had this problem last year trying to insure my 1.1 and because i couldn't afford to put both my cars on the road and couldn't get classic insurance on my Golf so it had to stay in the garage. I'm now 19 though and i'm hoping i'll be able to get a couple of good qoutes from places like Brentacre, Footman James, Adrian Flux etc.

I've searched through that many companies for insurance on a wide variety of cars where i now found places that'll insure me (19yrs old) on a mk4 GT TDI PD150, mk4 GTi 1.8T, mk2 GTi 16v etc all for under ?1600. I can even get insured on a 2.0ltr non turbo Impreza for less than my Golf, but i wouldn't go anywhere near a Subaru anyway.

Good Luck Trev

hi, i was 19 when i passed my test, my tip-get insurance in YOUR name otherwise you will be in this same position in a years time, it is well worth getting a years no claims. i also held out and bought a cinquecento 1.1 sporting for 500 quid which is not glamourous but it went like the clappers and took me round europe. a year later i have a beautifull mk1 cabrio! it was well worth the wait. by the way my cinquecento was ?470 with my boyfriend who has three years no claims (diamond insurance) and they gave me a good enough quote on the mk1 ?560
good luck mate!

Hi Alex, welcome  :D

No advice I'm afraid, other than that we always use the Co-op for our insurance as they seem to be pretty good, but don't know as yet how they do on insuring teenagers.  :dontknow:

Can you let us know though on how you do? My son is 17 and learning to drive, but already has a Series 1 1.1 that we'll be needing to insure soon.

(Like you he has no plans to trash his car as a boy racer, he's already too proud of it for that!)

Good luck in your quest  :D

I have done alot of research recently on a mk 1 golf C (1.1). The cheapest i got was about 1600 quid. Most quotes are around that from the big names. That was in my mums name with no ncb and with me as a second driver, TPFT. I tried playing around with fully comp/ different policy holder and there isn't much difference so if you value your son's golf pay the extra 100quid or so for fully comp. Tell him best of luck from me another seventeen years who hates insurance companies.  :y:

dude i no what u mean, im 19 now and had my mk1 on the road when i was 18, it was costing me 2k to insure it as i had a crash in my mums car    but wasnt my fault and because there was no other witness's outside of the car it went down as a 50 50 fault cus he said he was not at fault and visa versa. :banghead:  :banghead:

so i shopd around used a vary of things:
dont tell them what you are doing at college!!! you say anything to do with the motor trade BOOM it goes up! say your an engineer.
work out how many miles you are going to be doing and say that, if u insure your self for 12k a year and yoyu only do 5k they will charge you more. get a thatcham alarm fittd, got my toad ai606 supplyd fittd for 180  8) with certificate.
if you have a garage say its in the garage, its entirley up to you if you actually put it in the garage.
other then that bite the bullet like i did and get the cheapest quote and insure it. firstly i got it for 2k then i shopd around 2wks later i got it to 1400 so i swopd.

hope this helps.

simon

i always have the last laugh ;)

I'm 19, just bought insurance on my first Mk1 now tonight.

- Comprehensive
- Unlimited miles
- Me as main driver
- No NCB
- Dad as second driver
- Business use (includes SDP&C)
- etc.

?813!  Pricey, but good for a young driver.  1.5 GX.

Can't wait to pick the car up!

That's with Liverpool Victoria, btw.

cheers for that info. Sadly liverpool victoria don't do policies for under 18's so i will have to wait till january if i go with them. Thats another thing i hate about insurance: What difference does it make if im 17, 18 or 25 (for classic car insurance). I passed my test same as everyone else and have a full license. I know it's cause most young drivers drive like twats but it's still frustrating :banghead:

Even if you drive carefully as a young driver, you're less experienced than a 25 year old, therefore more likely to have an accident.  Even if the 25 year old drives link a plonker, he's done it all numerous times before.

liverpool victoria arew funny these days,

i was in exactly the same boat as you guys. at 17 all my quotes where like ?1000+ then someone mentioned liverpool victoria, gave them a call and a few minutes later i was insured on a 1 litre AX for ?690 fully comp! about a year later and 2 different cars i canceled my insurance with them as i sold my car but before i did i got a quote for a 306 dturbo. not a problem thats an extra ?90. Bargain! BUT when i went to get insured with them again as i was no longer an existing customer and they had changed there young driver policy they wanted to sting me for ?2k!!!

Been with elephant ever since (seem to do really good prices oir young drivers and can insure you for 10 months which gives you a years no claims early). LUPO GTI @ 19 was only ?590 fully comp woop!

Now i am still with them on my main car but have got a quote with HIC for the MK1 Golf GTI i have just bought. Im 20 and have decalired about ?2000 worth of mods.

Shopped around everywhere and that was the cheapest.

At last i have insurance  . I pay ?595 fully comp on a mk2 golf 1.6 driver. I'm on my dads insurance because it turned out that there was a ?50 difference between five years ncb and a no ncb on his toyota previa. The battle is over until the next pain barrier which will be starting my own policy when i'm slightly older (20 or so)

im 17and  have a mk1 driver 1.3 i got my own insurance for ?1300.
didnt think that was too bad!

18 in 2 weeks and got an insurance quote for a mk 1 gti 1600
for the same price!

I managed to get insurance in my name down to ?1300 for a 1.3 driver, but found them slightly sluggish so went for a 1.6. You will be a lot happier with a 1.6 cause they are quite nippy and can be all other student cars
