Check ou this useful link http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html . Scroll down the page, it has a calculator to compare tyre/wheel sizes and the difference in rolling radius. As far as I'm aware the Golf C 1.1 originally came with 145/80/13 tyres/wheels. Should be able to find 15inch tyres with similar rolling radius.

true. my tyres on the ronals were 45s rather than 50s. had to sell em when got shot of the car. see them eveyday on his 51 polo :-( looked waaaay better on the golf tho, an he knows it :-D

don't go any bigger than 15" as this can upset handling, 195/50 is an optimum package any wider and you'll start to tramline.
