My brother has a 1.4 16v fiesta and has blown me away many times.
By todays standards the MK1 is a slug.
You're not wrong - the Mk1 1.3 Golf had just under 60bhp, whereas I read today that the Renault Megane 1.4 16v has 95bhp.

Don't forget about some of these older small engined cars.
Not to be sniffed at for bhp.
Rover 214si 1.4 16v had 103bhp!
Fiat punto 1.2 16v sporting 86bhp
Fiat uno Turbo ie 1.4 118bhp
Renault 5 gt turbo 1.4 120bhp
The daddy………….?
Daihatsu Charade GTTi 993cc and 99 bhp not bad!
I think there is a nice feature on these in retro cars this month.
Respect to the little power houses 8)
Is this cheating……rx7…..1.3 (rotary) 237bhp?
Don't quote me on these stats…..
I don't think the mk1 gti is a slug! It's not all about bhp.
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

Don't forget the overall enjoyment of driving a mk1 Golf regardless of power/model.
I learnt to drive in my mk1 (it's always been in the family), took lessons/test in a Ford Escort 1.8, then had a Fiat 126 (parphhh), then a mk2 Golf CL 1.6, then a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8i, then a Peugeot 205 1.9 TD followed by a few others in between, then finally got the mk1 to myself. Out of all of them I prefered the mk1 in every possible way from gear-changes to the size & shape of the thing. Even the Fiat 126 wasn't quite as 'fun' to drive! (RIP little one!)

I wouldnt call the GTI a slug, in fact I still think it feels resonably competative due to its lack of weight - just needs a few mods to bring it up to modern fast hatch standard. My mate had a 2.0 8v MK2 and that could keep up with Clio 172 / CTR's all day log and the MK1 is lighter dont forget. Thats why I perfer to zip around in mi old buzz box far more than any fast golf/audi ive owned before - although I'm sure all my non-golf loving freinds think i'm crazy (still looking for a cure to this sad obsession :dontknow: ).

My 2.0 8v engine will be a beast. I need 162 bhp out of it to crack the 200bhp per tonne barrier. 8)

I dont doubt it mate - its the grunt in those that makes the car fly from no revs. Must be pretty much the max bhp you can get outa an 8v without going big bucks I reckon. Will it be in for Gaydon?

Don't think so  It will probably be built I just need some time to fit it which will probably be after Gaydon. Tick follows tock…..

One of the reasons i bought a MK1 was it handling. I have owned a few cars over the years and none of them came up to the MK1 nip and tuck ability. How many cars can go around corners on three wheels? The Pug 106 rally was the only car i owned that came close. The engine was so awfull always going wrong. VW reliability was another factor.
Alot of cars over the years want to be as popular, reliable, light as the MK1 golf Gti. Being as old must be a testiment of the strength and character of the peoples car. Doubt me if im wrong but i rekon MK1 is a new fashion today. Newer drivers today see the MK1 as must have.
Still great fun to whip past new, heavy monsters, of today..Thumbs are still up on the VW MK1 golf.

The 1 thing i dont get is when people brag bout the handling, imo its pants, that clio last night took me on every corner/round-about…mine was understeering like mad! Having said that tho its on std suspention with lowerd springs and std gti wheels…
supose its down to how you tweak em'..my old mk1 handled like it was on rails, cant wait till i get my coilies and wheels

Type of suspension, geometry, tyres, wheels - they all play their part in how the car handles.
How you drive is also a big factor though. It is very easy to get even the best handling mk1 understeering if you try to…

In my opinion Std wheels are just too skinny for the MK1 GTI
Get some wider wheels, quality low pro rubber and some coilies .

Correct camber plays a HUGE part as well..
where mine needs adjusting it twitches around corners and when that outer (depending which way your cornering!) wheel digs in it makes the back end make a bid for freedom!
makes an interesting drive though

I only get an drivers wanting to race me for some bizarre reason… At traffic lights they all look at me and rev their diesel bad boys…i dont get it?!
Have seen off a saxo vtr or vts, on some lovely twisties which i know rather well, which was fun! My car was much older than the driver (although it is older than me by a yr!…)
Apart from that i just always seem to be the target for peoples inability to drive….Getting cut up, tailgated (as soon as im in a 30/40 limit so theres nbothing i can do about it… ) and such like!
Had quite a good drive into work this morning with my bro in his 2.5 litre triumph gt6 mk3

what's the official (and tested) performance times for the GTI? 1.6 and 1.8 (although don't think they'll be much between the 2)
If I'm correct that it's 8.5 seconds 0-60 then it should pull away from the fiesta zetec-s at least
Mine Can and its not FI. Now my missus wants to trade her fester in cos i beat it in my 23yr old! "Ford- They've circled the problem!"
