Hey all,

Just spoken to teh garage today. I'd skillfully chopped out the old and broken alarm system but have since been told that it had an immoboliser too, which has meant the freshly built engine wouldn't start

Suffice to say that it has now been by-passed and the engine is sounding even better than new  :D

Hey all,

Just had a call from the bodyshopp saying that the car is now painted!  :D He also said that it is a good result, which sounds even better!

I'll take pictures as soon as i've seen it which should be this Wednesday after my last exam!

Can't wait to start putting it back together…

Its finished!

The last week has been busy what with buying bits and putting it all back together again but boy was it worth it

Have just driven the car to its storage place (It needs to be off the road until I can get a new MOT for it) and the drive is amazing. Honestly, the engine sounds beter and with less rattles than new. This was the first time I had driven the car (the old owner delieverd it to the workshop for me) and i'm amazed how well it handles, even with the mind suspension kit. I decided in the end to re-furbish and re-fit the strut brace as it sharpens up teh drive and is easy to remove if originatlity is an issue for the next owner (if I do ever sell it!)

Anways, I arrived at the bodyshop on wednesday with my freshly purchased new bumpers and front spoiler. I'm still waiting on getting a new wheel arch set as i've been told that none of teh GSF/Euro crew have any in stock anwhere. My side stripes have also arrived and will get fitted when I next see the car. It needs a new thermostat but GSF had still not dropped it off when I left so i'll fit it next time i'm there.

Right, on with the pix…

This was how I found the car in the bodyshop booth, I started reassembling in there and moved it furthur outside later that day.

I managed to (un)skillfully dent the new sunroof, but thats about as far as disaster have gone so far in this project..

Like I have said throughout, I don't want this to be a modified car except for the brakes, so here are my new groobved and vented and grooved volksbits disks (these are very good in my experience) with genuine pads..

The engine is now all back together and running VERY sweetly, the detailing work of the ancillaries has made a bit impact on how it looks under there IMO..

And here she is in all her finished glory. As I said, a few minor bits need doing but no more than an hour of so's work (hopefully). I need an auto electrician to check some wiring for me as the lights are being a bit funny so if anyone knows anyone good let me know! Anyways, here she is..

Looks like she's just off the boat from Volksburge (rubbish spelling)

The flanks look awesom, not dents/creases at all. The side trims have now been fitted..

And finally here is is cosying up with her new younger brother..

Any comments on the car gratefully received, I have now idea how much she's now worth but whatever it is this project has sure been worth it..

Hey all,

Its been a long time since i've been on here but not much has been happening golf-wise for me.

Sold the Mk2 0 didn't get as much as I wanted but I didn't make a loss and at least its freed up some capital.

My Mk1 has stayed in its garage. I get to go see it every 7 weeks or so and it still looks great. I just need to get a few bits done like mending the sunroof, move the front wing slighltly, apply the decals etc.

I've bought a Mini which i'm soing sum work on but once thats gone the Golf will be comming out of hiding and getting an MOT so I can finnaly run it it!

Its great to see a mk1 come back to full glory - a bit of hard work and some money!! you can have a lovely car just like that. Well done on a amazing job.

Can you PM me the details of who did the engine rebuild as I need to get my mk1 rebuilt very soon?

Did you respray in the engine area as well? Also have you got pictures of the interior?

Nice work  :D

wooaah, some great comments there, thanks guys!    :o

It helps me get motivated to roll it outta the garage and get the final bits and bobs sorted.

Anyways, these final things are progressing; I today sourced a very good used golf-ball gear knob which cleaned up great (the old one was incorrect). I also re-furbed the 1984 AUdi quattro wheels I bought and painted them white. They look amazing and I hope to get them on the car in the next few weeks.

I want to go up there for a day and get some work done, just so I can take some pix and start the ball rolling.

madone_si - The engine work was done by myself with the exception of the head - that was sent away to a specialist in Brackley (He does all the heads for BBR, etc) I sourced four genuine new pistons and rings myself (VERY lucky find - these retail at ?400+ the set). With regards to getting your engine rebuilt, i'd just get a re-conditioned unit from Volkspares (?500-600ish); it'll prove more economic than the way I did it.

Cheers for the comments guys, keep them coming and I promise to get more pix up soon.

Roll on the spring and longer days!

MK1 Resto Update + Help needed!

Hey all,

Another MK1 update from me as I went to see it a week or so ago.

I took along my freshly re-furbed Audi quattro wheels only to find that they don't fit  :banghead:    :(  The holes are slighly too far out so the studs won't fit. Gutted but never mind as I always intended to get the P-slots back on once re-furbed. Suffice to say, i'll get some pictures up if anyone wants to have them as i'm sure they'll fit other V-Dubs.

I'm set for getting the car going in the spring still - i'm pining for some good old fashioned lightweight fun (Kate Moss maybe? )

I need to find someone who knows Mk1's who's prepared to tie up the loose ends for me for cash, so if anyone knows anyone please let me know as work commitments mean i'm unable to do this myself at the moment :(

I'll get some pictures up asap,

All the best,

o :)
