Just imagine being involved in power generation at the highest level and it being a big surprise that its cold at the end of November and green renewables are unreliable.

@ng_eso
We're forecasting tight margins on the #electricity system over the next few days owing to a number of factors, primarily varying renewable generation levels and colder temperatures over periods of the day with higher demand [1/3]

It does need to happen, to save the planet, if it's not too late already….
I …
I dont think rushing this country into ev,s will save the planet, i believe if this country ceased to exist it would have no noticeable effect on world emissions. I believe its population levels that are the cause of most of the planets problems.

Was there a hole in the ozone before we started rockets? And how much atmosphere are we destroying with every rocket launch, every missile fired. Then what about Volcano's, destroying all the forrests….so they can't regenerate o2 at a point where it compensates for rocket launches…. Where does it stop…

I like a society of cottage industries..not corporate mashing up of our way of life. Even in our own little online club we are bonding and socialising..in lockdown that's been important for some of us. Most of you are constantly recycling your cars..they re not used heavily..they are symbols of our youth our freedom …we can be obsessive nutters with no one laughing.

There's a massive industry built around restoring and maintaining them, and besides we could always convert them to electric - that will become the new resto-mod…

but by the time diesel and petrol cars are extinct electric motors and batteries will be affordable, I reckon…

Then the fun began when Dad would let us assist him using a blow-torch and lead to fix dings in the fenders Bondo wasn't invented yet.
Probably the fumes from the lead cause my many issues…

You could also augment that the Wheels power small generators to Charge, less aesthetic influence on the Designers, and could be more able to charge bigger quantities. We could then at night with what over power we have generated augment the power grids, and in California that would be a good thing.
I can see it now that a Tesla would have a 3-4 foot wind turbine on the roof like of the car, and better yet near the trunk as air flow is greater at the rear. This additional weight would place a higher co-efficient of pressure on the rear wheels making them stick tighter to the roads, and if sufficient velocity is used then the speed of the wind turbines would also be able to augment the engines ability to produce force to move as the turbines could produce additional thrust to help it achieve higher
miles per amp.
We could tie this to airplanes to use electrical engines as well as boats, and trains….Oh what a wonderful world and direction we are going in. Pretty soon our
Oil producing nations would have to find other sources of revenue than oil.

Article today in the paper about hydrogen cars. They are not being looked into. Call my cynical but probably Tory cronies will make more out of electric ones. Trough snout and all that.
I think it's too late for hydrogen fuel cell cars. 10 years ago it could have been a contender, produced in refinerys and transported and distributed using the same existing infrastructure as petrol/diesel. To the user it operated the same, stop a 'petrol' station, fill up in 3 mins and drive for 400 miles.
However now battery EVs have a head start, govts and manufacturers have sunk 1000s x £billions in to them and theres no way back, even if fuel cells are a better techonlogy. It's like betamax and VHS, who gets to market 1st with a workable solution and gets a critical mass that becomes unstoppable.
The other issue is that although 'green' and only water comes out of the 'exhaust', it take electricity to make the hydrogen which is then used in a fuel cell to make …. electricity. Seems a bit of a silly way to go about it.
I don't think any major manufacturer is developing fuel cell cars and there is something like 3 place to refuel in the country

I have just had the most brilliant thought of my life for electric cars. place large wind driven turbine on the roofs (careful not to exceed the height of most parking decks, and or tunnels) having them break off on low over passes and into oncoming traffic would be detrimental. So as they are being driven they can generate sufficient power to keep the batteries at charge making them virtually self propelling. Also it would be a boon in Metro areas to keep the pigeon populations down.
You could also augment that the Wheels power small generators to Charge, less aesthetic influence on the Designers, and could be more able to charge bigger quantities. We could then at night with what over power we have generated augment the power grids, and in California that would be a good thing.

Nice idea Brian, but I think that the wind turbine driven on the roof would not work as you suggest. if you think about wind turbines, they need the energy of the wind which is absorbed by the sails to turn a generator. If you want to turn on a fan at home you need energy to turn it. So if you drove along with the wind turbine on your car roof, the turbine would take the wind energy to turn it which would result in such a resistance it would take much more energy to move the car forward than is being generated! At least that is the way I see it.
Oh and more weight on the vehicle means more mass to move which pushes up energy consumption.
I did like the pigeon population comment- did you mean the car turbines would scare them off?… or that the blades would chop them up -Big Mac "chicken" wings anyone
