More inner wind stripping. I've hit the rust with a screwdriver and it's solids but really pitted., if I use rust converter on it should it be ok?  image.jpg

Going to start zinc plating some parts today or tomorrow in the meantime I got the Gearbox painted and looking good. But I'm really concerned, I watched a video on YouTube of a guy doing a rebuild on his gearbox and he said that if you can lift the clutch assembly thingy (sorry don't know the name) the bit I painted black in the photo that there was a problem with the box, he did have the engine connected so I'm guessing that why but should I be able to lift the black connecting part up as it's really easy to do so at the moment but then it does spring back. Any help would be much appreciated!  B8EDE477-FC62-4D53-A2A9-15C4A72A719F.jpeg 9EAFABFD-A09D-4B56-989C-5BA581FDE6DD.jpeg 27C43D76-A67F-4577-A6D6-567F1659126A.jpeg

Block painted up. It's not shiny in person so pictures don't do it justice! Head to paint tomorrow 0880EEDC-0A53-45EE-A86D-420827938959.jpeg 7DB43CFF-E2BE-4625-A742-C4EE5BBD6AF6.jpeg B9B40D44-AA57-4CB2-85E2-985EE467C5F7.jpeg 16BACF92-806C-4CD9-83AE-25BD5940D2E5.jpeg 88BE6774-EF36-40AC-9458-9DA81CBA1E04.jpeg B9BC435A-8BA5-4410-A542-CF3A89C59A5F.jpeg 3CF86803-C727-4F5E-A6E7-2EA6CF48C3C6.jpeg DB8035E5-0E8C-46B9-972D-402EDA278196.jpeg

What a fail!  C17C56C3-0037-4CA0-BDCB-1D4BD4EA5603.jpeg BBDB9FEA-2CAF-4CD2-9AED-1F94A9B0615B.jpeg B96F5DE1-A923-4F17-9641-17E452A54390.jpeg 22E7C4C2-0918-427B-AA5E-92FD09674A77.jpeg

Got the head painted, and prepped a few bolts for plating, looking forward to giving it another shot. 2E0B7EFF-E8C5-45C0-8393-077B0FF8EF8D.jpeg 16241BA5-B20E-4DBA-81D3-929D61F6709F.jpeg BCCF8753-DBAA-4060-9516-AD268FA236FC.jpeg

Took off rocker cover last night and revealed some rust, so now I'm going to take the camshaft off and clean up. Not ideal and I didn't really want to start taking bits out from the engine but I guess I'm only going to do this once, so have to do it properly. Anyone know the torque setting for when they go back in?  42259E02-ED41-4A08-987E-57751CF2C533.jpeg D0E6715B-12B0-48C4-BA6C-BA8C3CEAF40A.jpeg

The bit you've painted black is the clutch release arm.
It will lift, although there should be some spring resistance. Lifting the arm pushes the push-rod on to the clutch plate to release the clutch. If the box was fitted I would imagine that this would be very hard to do as the spring on the clutch plate is rather strong (unless of course something is broken). You have a lot more leverage when you are pressing on the clutch pedal.

Have you, or are you planning on changing any of the gearbox seals? I have had a bad experience of either the output shaft, or push rod seal failing and contaminating a brand new clutch. Neither of these seals can be done with the box in the car.
Have a look at Welcome to BrokeVW.com It's a really good site for info on the 020 box.

I can dig out the torque numbers for the cam shaft retaining caps later on if no one else does first…

50A8015C-19B3-4555-A436-B30AE4D00E7B.jpeg Thanks very much! Got the camshaft off and all of the rust off with some emery paper. Came off pretty well, some small stains but not bad really. Need to check timing when engine is off the stand but feel a bit better about it all. Cheers guys!  7365A35D-B5FD-4A8A-AC5A-696768D9D1F8.jpeg DE08EE5F-2717-405D-A917-6F6B57F24683.jpeg

Started to get the hang of plating a bit better. Still not perfect, that's down to the preparation though and me not realising that wire brushing the parts after shot blasting makes all the difference! I'll be doing that from now. Here a pic of the rad bracket not perfect but a bit better!  D06D56A6-3430-4694-98B9-5C3A819B5373.jpeg

Bare metaled the rocker cover, well as much as I could ready for some primer! Looking forward to doing the nuts for the rocker cover tonight. Should look smart once done.  76341411-CCB0-4E5D-9C25-DF387007932B.jpeg 906F17E1-60F0-4CD7-87D2-AEDBBABFC34A.jpeg 017C1881-7A04-4842-A364-D8BD485850DE.jpeg

Few more bits plated. All engine mounts now shot blasted and painted. Making an order with classic parts which is a pricey one!
