Just about stripped down

Not sure if this has been done before so I thought I'd add a bit of bling and a personal touch albeit small its something, machined up some stainless nuts as the originals are mild steel. I might be able to retire if I get plenty of interest   20190606_154441.jpg 20190606_154843.jpg

Bit of yellow gold passivating and overhaul of drive shafts. Bodywork on the back burner but I'll get round to it. Wondering if I should keep it Alpine white or change it to another VW colour or a random one  ??????? 20190706_162656.jpg 20190706_162756.jpg 20190706_162804.jpg 20190706_162837.jpg 20190706_162845.jpg

So I thought I'd buy myself a hobby powder coating kit very similar to what I used in my previous employment, not that we had any need for it but many foreigners were done.  A few photos of the work done so far along with the portable curing oven. Deano777 Its from a company called electrostatic magic, there are three choices of kits, I bought the basic one at £149 with free P+P plus a free 1/2 kg  powder of your choice in colour, I also ordered spare powder bottles to speed up colour changes, the finish is all down to preparation and surface finish. Some parts of the golf are pitted from rust but I didn't want to remove metal and reduce the strength especially on suspension components. after coating its 10 mins at 180 deg C and that's it. 20190901_165631.jpg Rear axle all powdered up prior to being cooked at 180 C  Home made oven lined with the wife's kitchen foil  :ocf_emoticons__eusa_shhh: I used two heat guns which heated up to the required heat then cycled one of the guns to maintain the temp. 20190831_113011 (1).jpg IMG-20190831-WA0006.jpeg IMG-20190831-WA0011.jpeg

Its been a while since I have posted progress due to other stuff going on,  Its seemed such a shame to hide the front Bilstein inserts so a good blasting and a fresh powder coat sorted the look I was after, also bought some decals to finish off, also coated some engine covers, handbrake lever and spring tops. More to follow when I'm given time off by the real boss   20200306_144042.jpg 20200306_150223.jpg 20200306_144916.jpg 20200308_131032.jpg IMG-20200306-WA0016.jpeg IMG-20200308-WA0001.jpeg IMG-20200308-WA0003.jpeg

Nice work!

What were the strut housings, original VW?

Whip
/wip/
Noun - Car

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the whip. The term has now been generalised to classify any automobile.

Thanks mate,

Yes original struts, still had lables on, I just unscrewed locking nut and removed all internals along with some stinky old oil, think the gas had vanished a while ago.

been a while since my last post, ive done bits n bats on the mechanical side but the shell is on hold.
Well its raining outside so i thought id do a little bit of overhaul on the two switches, the MFA switch was stuck and wouldnt move so gave it a little persuade and prised off the slider…. it turned out that this the easy bit  :(   being a cabby im guessing the damp conditions over its life made the little ball bearing and spring rusty, managed to get the ball out and both cleaned up, dab of grease and then the difficult bit getting the two lugs back in the groove.. Well no photos as it was a two handed finaly balanced act, but it now moves between both lines and the reset part too.  Then proceeded to clean the high / low beam switch, that was plain sailing.  Engine had full overhaul with a deep clean so oil should stay golden for a few minutes  :) few photos of of engine and a freshly cleaned metering head and housing 20200722_145626.jpg 20200722_145645.jpg 20200722_145658.jpg 20200722_140730.jpg 20200722_141305(1).jpg 20200722_141657(1).jpg 20200707_115031.jpg 20200707_135712.jpg 20200707_135716.jpg 20200707_150653.jpg 20200707_150707.jpg 20200714_161724.jpg

That is going to be a seriously clean motor when it's all finished.
Love the homemade oven. Surprised you can get a powder coating kit for that kind of money - will certainly pay for itself.
Keep up the posts and the great work!
